Watching Goya this week, I couldn’t help but think there were two serials running at once. One was the actual story of Omar Hashmi and Mohini Mirza, who lost each other than found each other. Their relationship, what drove them apart, their reconnection is all playing like a beautifully balanced piece of music. The other story is poor Zara who seems to be a forced addition, she has made little to no investment in Omar emotionally or otherwise and is simply… there.
With a lot of patience and gentle pleading Omar has finally managed to bond again with Mohini. Their scenes are simply the best thing about this drama; I loved their scenes in The “Karachi” visit. Sana and Osman are great together each holding their own. It is actually nice to see some controlled acting, where the performers are trying to get their feelings across without long dialogues. Omar trying to be kind and keep a grip on his emotions shows he has really matured.
Rahat Hashmi has also finally realized that no man is an island and accepted his daughter Zaib. Zaib and Hashmi senior’s confrontation was great to watch but I really don’t have the “wali/paghamber” type thinking that people are just waiting for Rahat Hashmi too call and say sorry. I guess the desire for acceptance is human nature and it is Rahat Hashmi’s call which finally makes the difference for Mohini. The other call that Mohini makes to Zara makes no sense to me at all and personally I was cringing throughout. Why hasn’t Omar addressed this issue himself? If Mohini does survive are they all going to live happily as menage a trois? It almost seemed as if Zara was in a lot of ‘thassaly’ since Mohini was going to die anyway so let them have their month or so together . Mohini might agree but is Ms thoroughly modern Zara really going to share and of course the biggest question does Omar want to be in such a situation?
So this is the second last episode and the promo for the next one felt like a recap of the entire serial, I wonder why? I really hope Mohini lives and (much as I adore Hira Tareen) Zara needs to go help in a leper colony or something faintly useful in life. The number of magazines she flips through must be exhausting. Will Rahat Hashmi manage to save Mohini and redeem his relationship with Omar? It is my secret wish that no matter what happens Rahat Hashmi dies a cold, painful death.
Okay stop the presses we just got a glimpse of our very own heaven sent Nomi. He had been gone soooo long I was actually pleased to see him …
PLEASE ….Producers..Channels have pity on your viewers. We are sick of these Dusri Bivi story lines. I realise producers and channels have to make money but constant stretching of serials and repetitive story lines are only self-defeating. Goya had a really strong different kind of story, combined with a troupe of skilled young performers which gave it a fresh modern feel and both its writer and director are proven in their respective fields. Producers and channels should trust and support their creative talent rather than micromanaging things. Instead of following trends, why not set a trend and encourage innovation.
