Kya app kabhi apnay bhai kay rishtay kay liye larki dekhnay gai hain? If yes, then you will love to hate Saman (Maya Ali) , The main protagonist of Hum Tv’s Drama Zid
I haven’t been reviewing Pakistani dramas for a while because there aren’t any good dramas coming lately, I tried watching and all I could see was “Susral kay rung Anokhay” “Maika aur Susral” “Babul Ki Dawein layti ja” something .. Suchi mein there is a drama with a title like this. so I had been spending my time watching American TV shows and Big Boss and before you ask! I want karishma or pritam to win! :P and I really can’t stand Gautam pata nahi kya nazer ata hai sab ko us mein !
Anyway, let’s come back to Zid. So my question is, how many of you have actually gone through the whole Rishta finding process? If you have, then you already know that there are some unwritten, unspoken rules about it. Like the girl has to dress special, or the girl needs to be passing smiles and talk slowly or the girl needs to serve the tea and above all, THE GIRL MUST BE GORI CHITTI! :D
Zid is a simple story of an ambitious girl named Saman, Other than the GORI CHITTI Rangat , she doesn’t have any of the qualities for an ideal Rishta Larki, Saman is Practical and ambitious to the core ,don’t give a Sh** kinda girl. She is intelligent and wants to live life on her own terms. The only thing she hates the most is to compromise if she is married. The word compromise doesn’t exist for her. She would go to the extreme of calling off her engagement 10 days prior to her wedding. She would storm in to her X in laws and talk to them directly saying, me and your Son are not a match and before you call it off, I am saying No.
So what does the family do for such a girl? They tried getting her Nikkahfied to an American return Pakistani but not before they plot different kind of schemes which includes not letting her speak to the Larka. Werna Yeh wala bhi bhag jaye ga.. However Saman has some other plans. She take the US rishta as an escape to run away from Pakistan and settle in the US, like her Honay walai Bhabhi says. “She is a misfit in Pakistan”
And that’s the story so far, Saman is nikkahfied to an American Chora i.e Omar( Ahsan Khan) and while she is being smart , what she doesn’t know is that Captain America isn’t that Shareef bacha either. So what happens from here is something we will have to discover in the later episodes.
What I liked about Zid was the simple and direct approach. The writing by Bee Gul is not something new. when you start watching it, you can remember an old indian drama that aired on Sony TV “ Hum Pardesi hogaye” the difference here however is the character of Main protagonist. Both of them are poles apart. Other than that, I think Bee Gul has kept it pretty fresh and interesting. The lines are simple and there is no dragging so far. The characters have been really well thought and built. Let it be the phuppo that we all have in our family J or the bhai played by Humyun Ashraf, is really likeable and puts on a sincere act as the annoying brother as well as we the supportive father who will stand by her daughter.
The Direction by Adnan Wai Qureshi also deserves brownie points as well, infact it’s his direction that has kept the narration crisp and to the point.
Maya Ali takes giant strides as an actress and needs to be appreciated for portraying Saman to the T , to be honest it was quite a task for her to make everyone one forget her character in Shanakht as her character in Zidd is complete up side done, however ,she has really managed to do it with ease and that really shows her journey from Dur e Shehwar to Zid.
I do have some peeve with her character i.e she doesn’t really need to be Batameez or Moo Phat to make her point across, however that’s the way her character has been developed and that’s where we need our writers to break the stereo types. For example, in our society a girl who is even stating her opinion in front of her inlaws is considered to be Zuban Daraz , or someone who has her own ideology and wouldn’t be your HAAN JEE NAA JEE type is considered to be a Straight NO as our usual rishta wali anties would say “ Tauba Tauba” .
Being open and stating your opinion doesn’t make a girl batameez, however I guess let’s wait and watch and see how her character progress.
In my opinion Ahsan khan is the wrong choice for this character, why does it have to be him only? Is he the only one with a Multiple US visa? Or British passport I guess? I so wish that Adeel Hussain would have played the role of Omar. He would have done wonders in this role, aur uss kay pass tou abb US ka visa bhi hai :P ( Jackson heights)
I have liked the drama and would try to catch it this week. Might not be able to review it weekly but hey you never know, it might make me to do so,
Team Zid…. Challenge me!
