I was looking forward to this drama for some time first because I am a fan of Faiza Iftikhar’s writing and secondly I love Mehar Bano since I reviewed Daagh, however I had two reservations: Amin Iqbal the director and Gohar Mumtaz the male lead. Happily (SO FAR) it looks good. Gohar looks great in this role and at least in the first episode has caught the essence of his character making it look a lot more natural than some of the dialogues would allow the viewer to think. The direction is fine so far but I still think our dramas need more attention in editing and fine tuning the product rather than jumping on to the next project.
It is a fun, romantic comedy so the viewer will have to suspend any hopes of realism and just go with the flow of the story. It begins a little sadly with Samir(Gohar) failed attempt at marrying Ghazal (Juggan Kazim) . Her parents’ manipulation and discourteousy permanently turn Samir away from poor Ghazal. We see a very proud young man who won’t give an inch where his self-respect is concerned and would rather teach music than practice Psychiatry for which he holds a degree. For the cynics amongst us, keep in mind this is a romantic comedy, if you want realism watch the discovery channel. I felt a little sorry for Ghazal , who seemed the earnest sort ,working to support her parents and giving tuitions afterwards but It seems Samir was just not that into her . More of a case of compromise marriage before both hit some over the hill age they had marked in their minds.
Meanwhile we are introduced to Dilkush who trouble is waiting to happen. If it wasn’t for Mehar Bano’s complete lack of makeup or any form of artifice, I might have hated this manipulating little liar in an instance. Dilkush is born into luxury and doted on from all side so she really does not know her limits. Mehar Bano really reminds me of my six year old niece who will tell any story to get her way. Her boring cousin Ali wants to marry her but I am with Dilkush beautiful mother played by the always lovely Hina Bayat who declares she is too young to tie herself down to anyone at this age. I am guessing she is barely 17 or at the most 18? So as Dilkush gets rid of yet another music teacher at her school and Samir is looking for a job as a music teacher …we can see a clash on the horizon.
One of the biggest plus points is the fantastic OSTsung by Gohar Mumtaz, and the promise of Five Original songs for this serial. So far this looks like a lot of fun but I am not completely sold yet. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the director took a firm hand with the narrative and there was some serious editing because RomCom’s are meant to be fun rollercoaster rides. Any dragging story lines or long extended scenes would ruin it . I am looking forward to next week ,just to see how the laid back ,in control Samir reacts to chalako massi ,manipulator in chief Dilkush ….who will gain the upper hand ?
