Following is a list of my personal, favourite, heart-melting, aww-going couples in Pakistani dramas and soaps. Some of them are from the classical dramas and others are from more contemporary ones. Readers are, as usual, welcome to share their own favourite couples.
Couple # 10
Alishba and Rameez – played by Aminah Haq and Aijaz Aslam – Mehendi (PTV)
I don’t know what I had for this couple. Although for the most part of the drama, Rameez was not really interested in Alishba and was more into running after his girlfriend, the two eventually fell in love. All through the drama, this couple’s story was the one I enjoyed the best.
Couple # 9
Afaq and Fari – played by Nadia Khan and Noman Masood – Bandhan (PTV)
They were a hilarious couple. I still remember how Fari goes to court for a divorce and when the judge asks her what is wrong with Afaq, she looks lost. When Afaq reminds her he made tea for her, she snaps: “Is that the way to make tea?” Overall, this couple, too, fought all throughout the episodes and then finally made up in the last one.
Couple # 8
Eesha and Shahkar – played by Sarwat Gillani and Syed Jibran – Terey Jaanay Kay Baad (HUM TV)
This is a couple who tries to get along in a marriage of convenience, attempting to forget their deceased spouse from the first marriage. Their emotional, roller-coaster journey was portrayed beautifully by Sarwat and Jibran, and how they eventually get over their grief and learn to love each other.
Couple # 7
Eesha and Aliyan – played by Maheen and Zulfikar Sheikh – Aansoo (PTV)
Although Zulfikar Sheikh cannot act to save his life, this couple melted my heart all throughout this hit drama serial: their playful conversations, blossoming romance and finally, confessions of love on the day Eesha is about to get engaged to someone else. I would have loved to see them do another serial together but it turned out it was Maheen’s first and the last serial as she got married soon after and has not returned to showbiz ever since.
Couple # 6
Tooba Siddiqui and Faisal Shah – Muhabbat Tum Se Hai (HUM TV)
I found the entire drama serial totally pointless but this couple’s track was defitely worth watching. The wife was a serious, widowed mother, while the (second) husband was very jolly and fun-loving. It was heart-melting to see how he teaches her to lighten up, laugh and joke. They both realize the extent of their love when it turns out the first husband was not dead after all. Tooba and Faisal played the couple to perfection.
Couple # 5
Marina Khan and Ali Haider – Tum Se Kehna Tha (PTV)
Oh boy, I miss this couple! Why don’t we see more of such couples now? Although the drama was adapted from “While You Were Sleeping” Marina and Ali played perfectly the couple who know they are not supposed to fall in love, but they still do. Does anyone remember how they went to Hunza for honeymoon or fell in Ali’s office and then went for “mirchi walay fries”? It still makes me smile.
Couple # 4
Azaan and Afreen – Khwaish (ARY)
Although this was strictly a joint production of ARY with Balaji, and I don’t have much patience with the K soaps, I still could not resist Afreen and Azaan, who unwillingly marry each other and then fall in love. They have to face many, many unfortunate situations post-marriage, including people who want to break them up or cause problems. But they manage to get through with their love intact. THIS is the kind of love story I want to see more on Pakistani channels.
Couple # 3
Zoya and Ahmer – played by Marina Khan and Rahat Kazmi – Dhoop Kinaray (PTV)
Who can forget Dr. Zoya Ali Khan and Dr. Ahmer – the fun-loving Zoya and the too-serious Ahmer fall in love amidst patients and hospital’s crisis. It was absolutely a treat to watch!
Couple # 2
Khirad and Ashar – played by Mahira Khan and Fawwad Khan – Humsafar (HUM TV)
No words of explanation needed here. I will once again reiterate that this is the kind of love story that clicks with the viewers. We really do not want to see confessions of love coming in the last episode only.
Couple # 1
Bano and Hassan – played by Sanam Baloch and Fawwad Khan – Dastaan (HUM TV)
Again, no words of explanation needed. No couple has been able to beat this one in terms of innocence, chemistry and intense love portrayed beautifully by Sanam and Fawwad.
