After this week’s episode i don’t know if I should be annoyed , angry or sad, so if it is possible I will be all three . Normally it is Natasha who tests the thin veneer of civilization on my personalty which prevents me from throwing a jooti at the TV screen; but this week her mother Durdana made her look like an amateur. Even after her death , Shamim Hillali’s character’s positive influence over her children can be seen quite clearly in the way they cooperate and their concern not just for each other but all of those in their sphere. In contrast Durdana’s negative influence is evident in Natasha’s behaviour and may well have been the cause of Zaib’s initially manipulative ways . I dread to think what a household run by her might be like . She is an insecure , small minded woman who finds it difficult to think beyond herself . The reason she so readily believes Natasha is because she sees herself in her youngest daughter. So Natasha has been regularly filling her mother’s ears against Zaib and in turn Durdana has turned her husband against his own daughter . She even hid the news of her first panic attack from him and is aiding her youngest daughter in “punishing” her eldest . This is the most unbelievable part . Normal mothers would call a family meeting or try to patch things up . The funniest part of today’s episode had to be when Zaib’s parents finally meet her and make up , Rehaan declares he will throw a party to celebrate Zaib smiling again . Straight away Durdana suggests he throw a Waleema and buy his bride clothes and jewelry . Perhaps I am crazy but even in liberal America it is a point of pride for fathers to pay for their daughter’s reception .I have to say I am so impressed with Rabia Noreen, who is playing this role to perfection. There is so much nuance to this character and she has brought it out so well.I really like her acting in Dil e Muzter as well, where she plays a totally different but equally dysfunctional mother. I think our Barrey ,Buzurg had it quite right always look at the girl’s mother and her relationships with her family before making a decision about a rishta . I think the Rayaan , Bilaal and Muneese family might have saved themselves a lot of trouble if they had .
Getting back to the story , it has not moved forward much apart from the fact that Natasha is expecting again . My plea to writers and producers is this : I understand there are commercial considerations involved but please don’t ruin a perfectly good drama by stretching it out so much. Shorba bohat patla ho raha hai ! This story needs to wrap up . The acting of all involved was as usual phenomenal , and this is the reason we are all hanging on . The scene where Rayaan is defending Zaib and with oblique references to what he would like to do to those who hurt her was so sweet . Adeel Hussain is just wonderful , He and Amina Shaikh are just brilliant together . Danyal Raheel and Mira Sethi are excellent and so natural together that it looks as if we are looking in through the window of someone’s house and watching their lives . The direction and script keep us glued but the narrative or main story line is being lost in conversation after conversation . When will Bilaal , Zaib and Durdana come to their senses ? When will Natasha suffer some consequence for her actions ….?
I am going to make a guess here and let’s see what everyone else thinks : That little conversation Durdana and Natasha had about the lack of fertility in Zaib’s father’s family did not seem like an idle piece of filler to me. I think Zaib may well turn out to be adopted or at least Natasha’s half sister . That would explain a lot of Durdana’s attitude though it might not justify it .
