Ever since Sanjha moved out of Mumtaz’s kothi-khana to the Seth’s palatial house, it is as if the story took a wrong turn and has since been going around in circles trying to find its way home– whether it succeeds in this quest remains to be seen. For now we are watching a very confused Weeda and an equally confused Sanjha, both trying to sort through their feelings for each other. Now that fate has placed her in a position where she has the upper hand, Sanjha is trying to her utmost to humiliate Weeda for all his past misdeeds. The loser Weeda, on the other hand, instead of standing up for himself, is retreating into his sullen self. While such a spineless man might seem attractive to a twit like Narmeen, all I want to do is to give Mr. Weeda a piece of my mind and tell him to get with the program. Life does not just revolve around you and your miseries my friend, there is a younger brother who looks up to you and needs your support. Enough already!
For the past few weeks the story has revolved around Sanjha settling into the Seth’s house, where she is now an important part of his life. This Sanjha is no longer the young, innocent girl from the Thar; rather she is the disillusioned Reshmi, someone who has not only lost her naiveté, but also her wide-eyed trust in everybody. She has lost everyone she once held dear: her home in the Thar, her beloved sister Naseem, her friends at the kothi-khana, and her lover, Weeda. These losses have turned her into a bitter cynical girl, one who is not above using all means, whether fair or unfair, to punish those she holds responsible for the mess her life is in – and number one on that list is Mr. Weeda. While she is busy playing out her revenge games, Laeeq questions her conscious/unconscious motivations, “Kabhi socha hai yeh tum ne, yeh muhabbat hai ya jang?”
While these two confused kids tried to figure out whether they loved or hated each other, I was busy trying to make sense of the most lost character in the story – Narmeen. What the heck is this girl up to? Where are her brains? How can she delude herself into believing that she loves a man she knows absolutely nothing about? And, where are her parents in all this? Why has her mother agreed to the marriage? How can they get married within a week? Did somebody forget that the guy is a student, no financial prospects, no house, no family, no nothing…? The mother in me is completely aghast.
For me, Sanjha has lost its charm. Though the acting and other technical details continue to be top-notch, this unexplainable twist has overtaken all the positive aspects. At this point, I don’t really care how/when the serial ends because I have lost my emotional stake in the story. The issues that attracted me are no longer there. The characters I loved, all disappeared without any explanation, and the sweet little love story, Weeda and Sanjha’s, that I enjoyed so much, has now turned into something bitter and ugly. All in all, I’m hugely disappointed.
Sorry guys, just not feeling it anymore …
