Second episode down and this serial still seem to be picking up speed. Ghoshi urf Shagufta Shehzadi is one determined young lady and, though she perhaps would not even admit it to herself she has set her sights on Shams. Poor old seedha sadha patang baaz Elyas , Ghoshi’s supposed fiancé is most definitely getting taken for a ride . Much as I like spirited characters, Ghoshi seems a little tez to me. Her family, especially her father has caught on that something is not quite right but refreshingly hasn’t made demands or speeches about ghar ki izzat , rather he hopes to deal with the potentially explosive situation in a diplomatic manner. If they move house from Gwal Mandi to Defence, Ghoshi will have to leave college and in his simple mind that would end his daughter’s rebellion before it took flight.
Ghoshi is an interesting character, not the usual bholi larki we see in most serials. This girl has hopes and dreams that she sees absolutely no need to suppress or sacrifice. Elyas may think he has won a prize by getting engaged to her without asking about her feelings but all he has done is caught a butterfly in his hands for a moment or two. Ghoshi never pretends for a minute that she thinks of Elyas as anything more than a friendly cousin, and quite openly declares his so called sharafat is just a cover for his cowardice or inadequacies. For a strong willed woman like her it must really rankle that she was picked like a flower in a garden by this man-child. Ghoshi may not want to hurt her family but she actively pursues the object of her desires, Shams, and I have a feeling that she is just waiting for a positive response from him before she ever so gently dumps Elyas. Much as her family adores Ghoshi, she really does not come across as particularly lovable or sweet. Having said that It makes for a refreshing change to see a woman with ambition and the strength of conviction in her own decisions. Hira Salman seems to be playing this character with just the right amount of nuance and subtlety required.
I really felt sorry for Elyas played with great charm by Hassan Noman. Coming from Lahore myself ,Elyas is instantly and endearingly familiar. The chaskorapan , constantly trying out new dishes , the naïve obsession with kites and the even more naïve assumption that things will go his way are all so recognizable. He should be annoying but he isn’t. He is in the wrong for pushing an engagement on Ghoshi but his character is ingenuous, no one could possibly hate him . Besides I have a feeling that the patangbaz Maryam played by Mira Sethi may well be his consolation prize.
So far this looks like a good performance from Ahsan Khan as well, who looks every inch the Punjabi, Zamindar type. He is just as determined as Ghoshi and he has plans too, plans in which the girl from Lahore would be an unwanted distraction but despite that his interest seems to be piqued. I am guessing it won’t be long before Mr. Zamindar falls under Ms. Ghoshi’s spell. Ahsan Khan is underplaying this character to great effect, holding back on the overt mannerisms and swagger usually associated with such a role .Shams promises to be a powerful role if he can keep it up.
The other highlight in the serial is of course Irfan Khoosat. Some people are just magic on screen and there Irfan Khoosat is one of them. Maybe I am looking for an Agha Jan substitute but I hope we get to keep seeing Ghoshi kay Abbu on screen.
I have to say director Ehtashamuddin has built a wonderful atmosphere of Lahore and the Punjab in these two episodes, and sitting here writing this so far away, this serial gives me the feeling of happy times spent with family. Ehtashauddin knows how to create atmosphere and romance but if I remember Sadqay Tumharay Khalil Ur Rehman’s Qammar’s rather complicated storyline defeated him in a few places. However he seems to have a handle on Amna Mufti’s more purposeful style at least for now. if only for that thank you team PNKK . Amna Mufti has written and interesting romantic comedy which if you listen carefully could easily have been a quite serious serial .I wonder if the Romcom was a later decision? Either way this looks like a well written script, and I am hoping it will be well plotted too.
