In the spirit of Ramadan, I’m going to start off this review on a positive note- Mann Mayal may actually have had a chance with one simple change- showing Salahuddin and Mannu as cousins. I’m not the greatest fan of cousin marriages/ love triangles but, one can’t deny they are a very big reality of our society and one that we can identify with. Salahuddin’s attitude towards Mannu was always more like a big brother and were that the case, the class difference, the milkay bicharna and the guilt would all make sense. Salahuddin’s keeping a close eye, looking out for her, or her father’s phone call wouldn’t all seem so mystical and out of place. But as it stands, that’s not the case. So, is Mann Mayal promoting the idea of an extra marital affair while trying to keep it kosher? Is that even possible?
In her time of need, the ever helpless Mannu has no one to turn to so decides to call on the one person she trusts- not her parents, not Sara Baji, in all of Karachi she never interacted with a single soul except her now dead in laws… So who does she reach out to? Not even Salahuddin but his faithful servant- Jamil! Yes, Jamil, the guy who masqueraded as a servant, sorry, he is a servant but still… The guy who manipulated our innocent Mannu and got her to open up and eventually rely on a Buzurg… Essentially trying to bridge the gap between Mannu and her ex Salahuddin… The guy she kicked out, barely knew on a personal level. What makes Mannu so trusting of strangers is beyond me. She seeks his help, brings her kids to his home- Salahuddin’s home never once considering the risks involved with trusting an unknown man? In Karachi? In her defence, he did call her Baji…
So Jeena’s fixation finally paid off. She plotted with Jamil to ensure Mannu and Salahuddin are kept apart and made her move. She came on so strong, Salahuddin didn’t know they were engaged and felt duty bound to buy her a ring and make her wear it. How does a simpleton like Salahuddin take a huge step like this without consulting his parents is beyond me. Also, Jeena was dying to spend the night- agar nikah hojata toh mein ruk jaati? That hasn’t stopped you before, sister. All this sugar coating and shalwar kameez doesn’t change what it is- Salahuddin and Jeena are extremely comfortable with Jeena spending the night in his home. Salahuddin is stuck having an emotional affair with Mannu and trying to adapt to having Jeena in his life, in his home, in his kitchen, in his office… Jeena starts feeling insecure the moment she sees Salahuddin run behind Mannu having spotted her running with Jamil…
Mannu finally spills the beans about how Mikael never liked her and how Bia ka Bhai will help her. Because there’s no possible way for her family to help her? She’s penniless and if course, they have no way of sending her money to buy tickets to come to them. Neither did they think it fitting to stay in Karachi a few more days- when I last checked, Karachi has hotels where people can pay cash, credit, debit and stay… It also has food so surely they wouldn’t be starving. Seeing that Mikael was misbehaving, didn’t they realize it would be important to stick around close by just a few days to watch over her- maybe see if she would change her mind about coming home?
Was there even a point to Mannu’s Abba’s heart attack? Least impactful character in the drama. Even Jamil packs a greater punch and he’s the house help! So Salahuddin is acting all macho again and insists Mannu move in to his home- coz even Jamil’s residence is after all a part of Salahuddin’s home… But of course, our Mannu has far more integrity and chooses to remain with Jamil. She also throws in a speech about how Mikael can treat her as he pleases- he is her husband… Umm, so why not stay with one of your husband’s servant then???
Jeena and Mannu under the same roof- Shukk Part 2? Although, hats off for creativity- neither of these ladies is married to Salahuddin yet…
