Today, up until now I have had a very interesting time at school. We shot 3 short movies back to back for last 3 days and today was footage review day. I was working on a concept with a few classmates and we were stuck at an idea and were trying to flush it out. One of my classmates Han stood in the middle while the rest of us circled around him to see if our idea would work with the camera panning in circular direction. We did this drill with him again and again until he went from being amused to completely sterile about it. My point in mentioning all of this is that we subject people to enough or limited content to capture their attention. However we repeatedly encircle around them with the same content, it looses its context and you also lose your audience along the way. A similar trend is occurring in Numm. Believe me I love Numm because it gives so much reading into content of its characters, the situations are twisted and you are left on nobody’s side. Its dark and it makes you think, wonder and question. However there has been little balance in how much to reveal and how much to hide behind the curtain. We are in episode 7 and the drama has barely progressed in terms of plot. It’s about time we see some rising action in the story. Mysteries and subplots are introduced but they are forgotten about as well.
Today’s episode contained one or two scenes of interest. For some reason we were bombarded with Salima and Masood scenes, Salima and Mehjabeen, Salima and Wali and Neelum and Jonti’s scenes. Voila Salima has suddenly stolen the spotlight from everybody and has become a major main character. Two major developments came from todays story though:
1) Neelum has developed a huge crush on her husband Wali and she has proven how possessive she is about their relationship. Someone who has a hard time-sharing the poor tree (don’t you feel sorry for the tree?), how can she share her prize with someone who has a lowly status of a Vani. Apparently as if the 3 times a day phone calls weren’t enough torture for poor Wali, we learn that Neelum is soon to be due back and well that ought to be a lot of fun!

2) The Dawat Scene: It was ironic to hear the people responsible for stealing away much needed resources from the nation and lending a hand in corrupting our country to the core, musing about “kharab halat.” The escape route most of them find is by having dual nationalities and dupe whoever stands in their way. At least in foreign countries they avoid litigation and persecution from their own people. Between all these conversation, Wali stood out when he lashes out that these people were running away after their own house, while it was on fire. A question that stood out the entire time in those dawat scenes was that wasn’t Wali about to also go to a foreign school to avoid being part of the system? Wasn’t that his escape route as well?
Many questions still remained:
Why on the earth is everything dysfunctional in the Bakhth household without Mehjabeen?
Why did wali took a 180 degree turn and starting care of Mehjabeen while just a few days ago he was lashing out on her?
Why is Mehjabeen treated with so much respect?
What happened to all the other subplots? What happened to Amtul? Was that young curly hair man Wali or Mahjabeen’s younger brother?
I wish and I was hoping some of these answers would have been addressed today…alas…
Until next week Folks!
p.s i am going to try my best to reply to comments. I am so sorry i have been awfully busy shooting and its been crazy for past few weeks :(
