he second last episode of Numm aired today and with much anticipation, I watched it as I felt that it’s about time a lot of questions that have been unaddressed would be answered or discussed today. Alas, very little towards the end was revealed and it was done in such bad manner, that my eyes were almost numm by the pain that “this is what we have waited for?” Not to mention, the phone calls, the long drives, the repetitive old flashbacks, the painful Neelum’s family overlong repetitive over stretched scenes…truly this was an episode told in Numm fashion through and through.
The episode began with Wali warning Mehjabeen to move out of the house as her and Qasim’s life is in danger. Of course the conversation had to happen over the phone. One great outcome of the phone conversation was that, to put kindly in “Roh’s” terms Mehjabeen is “MahG” to all the guys. On the other hand, Manahil is throwing a tantrum over why Neelum is not speaking with Wali anymore and Neelum storms off back into the home…yippee…I feel sorry for this new coming child. He has no idea what is he getting himself into. At this point insert Wali driving and all of a sudden in flashback mode, he remembers Neelum.
In the gaoon, Baray Sahab is scheming to ensure and announcing far and wide that Wali will become a politician and keep up the family tradition. Only thing Baray Sahab forgot to do was to ask Wali what he thought of these plans. Wali goes to meet MahG and Qasim and informs them of the escape plan he has hatched for them. Wali here has best interests in heart for both of them, however Qasim’s bubbling teenage hormones put a damper on the plans. There was nothing dramatic about the gun pointing at Wali’s face scene. It ends before it even begins. Oh and lets add more Neelum Wali flashback scenes …
The most important conversation of the episode happens towards the very end. It is finally confirmed that there was nothing more then a mother-son relationship between Wali and MahG. Wali appropriately concludes that he is not sure what should they name their relationship or how to define it to other people. When its just FK and SS together on screen, it seems like Numm is magnified and all of a sudden becomes a better drama. However insert any other character between them (maybe with expectation of bare sahib) and everything seems mediocre. MahG also informs Qasim and helps to put his misplaced anger in perspective. This is where the past is revealed. The overall violence was not instigated by the Bakht khandan but by Mahjabeen’s own brother. What still remains a mystery is as how on the earth did the brother ended up in Bakht house undetected, killed a person, walked out and 2 mins later everyone figured out it was him that killed Alamgir. And then we are still left with the question, were Mehjabeen and Alamgir married or not?
At this point, I am just happy this drama is ending next week. Clearly its not enough to cast star power, its also good to be able to tell a story at a good pace. Numm was an excellent story, it just wasn’t done justice to.
