Mi Raqsam Overview – Episodes 1-8

“Wo baap hai meray. Mainay apni puri zindagi guzari hai us ke saath. Khud to aakay apna rooka-dhuka suna kay chala gya….aur mujshe? Mujshe mera haal tak nahi poocha?……Phir hamara dil itna kamzoor kyun hota hai? Kyun hamara dil unkay liye itna halkar hua chala jata hai? Zulm wo karay, zabardasti ki shadiyan wo karay, aur hum? Hamara dil unkay liye sakht hi nahi hota? Kyun hamara seenay main un jaisa dil nahi hai?” -Sadia on her father

This is simply one amazing dialogue from many in this serial, Mi Raqsam. Haven’t had the chance to put up an earlier review of it because I was trying to catch up on it, and now that I have, why not put up a review? This is a drama that is shining some light on what really happens in Pakistan. Hypocrisy, using religion as an excuse, selfish people, very young brides, etc… are just some of the aspects that are shown here. I wasn’t all too set on watching this, but then my parents put it on one day and I decided to just see how it really is. And I’ve got to say, I’m amazed at how subtly, but clearly, things are told. So, without further ado, here’s the plot:

Zeeshan has had a pretty tough childhood that included his ill mother passing away, his father marrying another woman who Zeeshan hasn’t been able to accept all these years, and becoming very close to a girl, Sadia, who he can’t procure after all this time. He grows up hating his home and leaves to study abroad. His father is a man of high status who starts to dislike his second wife, Mehwish, because of why his son couldn’t accept her.

Sadia (Aiza Khan) is shown to be sort of a shoulder to cry on, best friend, and kind of like a childhood sweetheart after all these years for him, before her father forces her to get married to a Maulvi, who already has been wedded 3 times previously, and all of his wives stay together. She has grown up all these years to look up to her father, remain kind of a child at heart, and just be fun-loving. When she finds out about the fact that she is getting married forcefully, she obviously tries to resist, but her father still gets her wedded to him. Her personality instantly changes, and she becomes completely serious and solemn about life.

All of this leads to Zeeshan finding out about her marriage, and unmistakably becoming overturned. He takes an admission in the maulvi’s ‘madrasa’ and pretends to be a student there, with his intentions being that he could persuade Sadia to running away with him. The question is – will that be possible?

Another track that we are shown is Sadia’s father, who decided to get Sadia married so that he could marry the Maulvi’s daughter, who astoundingly, is between 13-14 years of age. This part seriously blew me away because I had heard of these marriages taking place, but I didn’t know they were that common to the point where Sadia’s father doesn’t think twice about getting her married to a 50-60 year old man, solely to get himself married to a young girl. It’s kind of sickening if you ask me.

Anyway, as young as she is, some guys in her ‘mohalla’ start to obsessively annoy her to the degree where even Sadia’s father doesn’t trust her and ends up beating her. This is a really young girl and he can’t understand her situation at all. She seems to be even younger than his own daughter! How could he just let that slide? It makes me sick to my stomach to think that this is the reality.

This drama is filled with authenticity, and even though Geo doesn’t seem to have some good dramas these days, I have to admit, this serial shows the reality of our society without being vulgar about it. Anyways, it’s an amazing story that leaves you enthralled.

The crew has also done simply amazing! The director being Sabiha Sumaar, produced by A&B Productions, and written by Kifayat Rodini, everyone had done wonderfully! The cast includes Salman Shahid, Aiza Khan, Shehzad Shiekh, Nausheen Shah, Waseen Abbas, Rashid Farooqui and others who portrayed each character very precisely. I love how the scenes are thorough but not dragged and the transitioning is very smooth as well. The dialogues are mind blowing at times and each character’s emotions are just perfect.

Loving this drama and I definitely recommend it to you all! Everything about it is just so real and filled with actuality. So try putting it on one day and see how you like it! Personally, I think it’s amazing and there are so many twists that you can’t really predict what happens next.

P.S. I won’t be putting up weekly reviews of this, but I’ll probably put it up after every 2-3 episodes. :)
