Mehram which started off really well with an interesting story line and somewhat unconventional subject has somehow stagnated. It has turned into one of many apathetic “dusri biwi” dramas that have unfortunately taken over the TV industry these days.
In the 24th episode, Iqra leaves Hamza’s house pretending to be in love with Areeb and walking out with him. Areeb takes her to the publishing office where he has made all the preparations to get iqra’s poetry published with the preface dedicated to Hamza which Iqra finds very offensive and take it as an intrusion into her privacy. She tells him off and prohibits him from seeing her again. On the other hand, Maya is still not happy with Iqra leaving the house and storms into Areeb’s house, forcing him to approach Hamza and demand divorce for Iqra. Areeb goes to Hamza’s office only to be reprimanded by the latter who is extremely perturbed by Iqra’s leaving the house. Hats off to Hamza’s brilliant facial expressions conveying the predicament he is suffering from.
The story takes a sudden twist with Maulvi sahib’s unexpected death. Hamza who unexpectedly arrives at Iqra’s place when her father’s body is being taken for burial is shocked beyond words. Areeb chooses this moment to reveal the truth about his relationship with Iqra and inform Hamza about her feelings towards him. The episode ends with Iqra spontaneously embracing Hamza upon seeing him at her place.
For me the highlight of this episode was the last scene where Iqra sheds off the façade of being an extremely controlled and somewhat indifferent woman. The gesture of hugging Hamza in front of everyone clearly conveyed her intense feelings and dependency on her so called husband. As far as acting is concerned, all the actors have done justice to their roles so far except the close up shots of Hamza which have looked quite awkward at times with his weird aggressive dialogue delivery. With Areeb’s announcement of leaving the country and Iqra and Hamza coming close to each other, it is not difficult to predict the next episode which should be the last episode as there is nothing much left in the play now, however , there could be a twist we might not know off so let’s wait till then.
