Mastana Mahi – Last Episode

With its final episode, yet another amazing drama serial came to an end. Mastana Mahi might have been really slow in the beginning, but it picked up pace and gripped the viewers right down to the last scene of the last episode. In fact, if one does an objective analysis, one will realize that not even ONE scene could have been clipped – and that is saying something.

The characterization overall was excellent – I have written before that all characters were as close to real life as possible. We all forgive and forget and move on – so why should the characters on-screen not do that? We also make mistakes but repent sincerely – why then are we so unforgiving towards on-screen characters?

The last episode itself has received a mixed response. Within the episode itself, a lot of people felt that Adal’s kidnapping was not needed – of course, it was needed, to bring together the family. Nothing unites family members more than a common crisis. As I wrote before, no moment of this last episode could have been clipped. Personally, I feel the ending was fairly decent, though a little unexpected. Yes, I had expected Adal to remain with one wife only – either Aleen would leave or receive a divorce, or Suhay will die in childbirth (oh yes, imagination has no limits). However, in the end, we got our ‘happily ever after’ ending – with a few compromises of course.

All credit goes here to Samira Fazal of course, who did not give us a typical ending and instead, sent out a strong message that our personal, petty issues are nothing as compared to the greater issues affecting the society around us. Suhay’s words, while convincing Aleen to stay, went straight to my heart, at least. We really do not think beyond our own issues and it was commendable to see, on the screen at least, one family of politicians who believed in positive social change. And therein lay the charm of the serial, which made it so different from the usual depressing situation we see in real as well reel life.

I just found one thing VERY irritating in this episode and that was Dastaan’s background score playing in the last scene. I understand that the composer was the same. However, it just does not bring back the same magic. If similar background scores could do the trick, the drama “Zaibunnisa” (PTV) would have become as popular as “Dhoop Kinaray” – the former used the same background scores as the latter, without being able to create the same magical effect that Dhoop Kinaray had had on the viewers.

Apart from this one glitch, the drama serial overall was a very commendable effort – hats off to the entire cast plus the writer, director Roomi Insha and producer Momina Duraid. We will miss this serial, but hope to see similar issues being addressed on-screen.
