Marasim :episode 8 review

Marasim is fast turning into my weekly treat. Each episode I am slightly nervous , waiting for some failing ,some dip in the consistently high quality of acting , direction and production but am happily disappointed again and again .This was another fast paced, well edited episode where each scene was powerful enough to keep my attention firmly fixed on the story unfolding before me.

There were so many good scenes and great dialogues that it is hard to pick a favourite. Ahsan Khan was simply brilliant, in a quiet controlled performance that rivals his excellent portrayals in Pani Jaisa Pyar and Dastan. I felt so bad for Daud; his distress was so clear and so deep. This kind of conversation between mother and son has been shot a thousand times in so many dramas and yet there was a depth we don’t normally see. Gaythi Ara knows how she has hurt her son but she is trying hard to make up for it ; again she offers to break everything off and reach out to Momina but Daud is no fool , he knows Momina will not break her new relationship to return to him.marasim82

The levels of self-deception at Sheher Bano’s house are unbelievable.  Both Mother and daughter are convinced of Gaythi Ara’s villainy and their own perfect innocence. No mention of the way Abdullah deceived them or the way he let Daud’s sister down, just like Gaythi Ara, her children deserve little or no consideration. Sonia Hussain impresses again and again showing her characters vulnerability as well as her determination. There is no doubt that just like Daud, Momina is torn apart at losing him but her monumental ego will not allow for even the appearance of weakness. So she must be the best dressed at the party, the one with the brightest smile even if she is crumbling inside. I found it fascinating that Daud blames his mother but Momina does not question Sheher Bano’s actions for a momentimages

Meanwhile Zaid is dying of a broken heart? This was the least believable part of the story but it was shot well and thank fully not dwelt on. Call me heartless but the quicker Zaid goes the happier I will be. Nayab and her family were a minimal part of this week’s episode but their poverty served as a useful crutch to Sheher Bano’s ego. Momina however is still young she has not reached her mother’s level of self-interest so she gazes wistfully at Nayab dressed in yellow, preparing to be Daud’s bride. If only she knew that behind the mask of passivity how Nayab is suffering, but that would require a level of empathy alien to Momina’s character. I really felt for Momina but I still cannot shake the belief that Gaythi Ara and her son have had a lucky escape, that sometime in the future even Daud will thank his mother and Abdullah.marasim8

Full credit goes to the actors Saba Hameed and Naila Jaffry for keeping this drama above average. Zanjabeel Shah’s wonderful dialogues and Owais Khan exemplary direction make this the highlight of the week’s viewing.
