When the Devil enters our hearts he brings a lot of excuses and even more justifications. Ask the world’s worst criminals and they will carefully explain how whatever crime they committed was not their fault but a situation forced on them by cruel circumstance.
The brilliance of Marasim’s Script is that it refuses to judge, allowing the viewer to see the situation from each angle. Daud and Momina: desperately snatching at their last chance for “true love”, Nayab: dependent and helpless, Gaythi Ara: trying to make a way out of the mess for herself, and Sheher Bano: the surprising voice of reason because she has the most to lose. I am not sure who is worse Daud or Momina? Neither one has any feeling of remorse or pity for Nayab nor for that matter Fahad; who are just obstacles to the cozy future they are planning together. In way Gaythi Ara’s actions are vindicated as a couple Daud and Momina are a lethal combination, entirely selfish and cruel to anyone outside their magic circle.
Gaythi Ara has really turned into the most cynical kind of villain in this drama. Even though she is self-aware, she manipulates each situation towards her advantage and I cannot help thinking perhaps her mother in law did really have the measure of her. Nayab is the biggest victim here but I hope not for long. Perhaps she can use the money Daud will send her to build an independent life away from this selfish family. Urwa’s performance was one of the highlights of this episode; she makes Nayab seem strong despite her helplessness and manages to tell Daud off despite being in the weaker position. Sonya Hussain and Ahsan Khan never fail to impress and bring home each nuance of Momina and Daud’s obsession for each other.
Fabulous acting by the entire cast and excellent direction are the hall marks of this well written, well shot serial. I truly wish other production teams would put this much effort into each of their serials.
