Disclaimer: I have been cast into the enticing web of Man Jali’s characters and delightful dialogue. Dear readers check out Man Jali’s unfolding for yourself and decide if you manage to escape unensnared.
There is a sparkling intelligence and strategic counter-play in Man Jali that will certainly perk you. There is also some tasteful satire sprinkled all over. Its ironies, thankfully, are not portrayed in an overly melodramatic manner.
Liberal, intelligent, and indulging set of parents (Jalal & Fakhra Mirza) so closely bonded in love and devotion for each other are paired with a seemingly shallow, rake of a son, Taimoor. His easy conquests of fair maidens stretch endlessly out into the ocean. There is nothing held sacred by him.
At the other end, the lecherous Wahab Ahmad has his partner in astute and smart Zareena, whose sharp-tongue lashes out intelligently. Proud, courageous and no-nonsense Tooba is the daughter of this pair. She isn’t scared to take on the world, and tosses away annoyances that come in her path. She is full of scorn and disgust for Taimoor and his weaknesses. Ramis is the epitome of fidelity and has a heart of gold. He is easily bullied by everyone, Aunt Zareena, his love Tooba and her sister. Not to mention certain street ruffians. A weak twist in the plot weakens Tooba to concede to wed Taimoor.
In my naivete, I assumed that the recent story track was revolving around the reformation of Taimoor, the quintessential rake by protagonist Tooba. Austere Tooba, with her seemingly mute fortitude and underlying intelligence would straighten him out. I obviously got over-inspired by The Arabian Nights.
Instead, the plot may likely focus on Tooba regreting the sincerety and straight servility of Ramis. After all, it was mentioned somewhere in the synopsis, that Tooba would finally get married to Ramis?
Taimoor’s parents become less indulging and strive to turn him around. Tooba remains an enigma, as it is hard to interpret her recent silent self, post-marriage.
To Jalal & Fakhra’s disappointment and our consternation, will Taimoor remain the distasteful rake as ever and never see light? Will Tooba accept defeat and finally turn to Ramis and his unshattered fidelity? Or will we see Taimoor spin another surprise from under his sleeve and win over Lady Tooba?
