Kuch Pyar Ka Pagalpan – The Finale

I am still smiling. It is not very often that the ending of a drama serial, which has disappointed you so much, leaves you on the note that you are reminded of exactly why and how you fell in love with it.

Anyway, so Kuch Pyar Ka Pagalpan has ended. I spent the previous week reading my previous reviews, trying to muster up the same excitement I had felt when it was about to start, and indeed, during the first few weeks it was on air. I am not sure exactly when even a die-hard fan like me also lost interest, but I kept watching week after week, if only to enjoy Samira Fazal’s excellent dialogues.

The last episode – the last double episode – went on air today and by and large, I was left with mixed feelings. The ending, though predictable, came about in a very roundabout way. I had to fight off the urge to fast forward many scenes, BUT I had to laugh at Safina’s “he’s in love with you”, the way Shimraiz tries to snatch Kiran’s address from Daneez and of course, the last scene which was by far the BEST.

The main issues I had with this episode were the same as we have had in the previous weeks. The background music was too loud at many points, to the extent that it was difficult to make out what the characters were saying. There was literally too much of “thinking” scenes, especially on the part of Shimraiz – I mean, really, some flashbacks of Kiran would have been nice here to add to his morose expressions. Kiran’s hairstyle again altered from one scene to another, and Daneez it seems was wearing the same dress for most of the episode.

Of course, the continuity issues also remained very much intact. Daneez “caught” Kiran and Mujtaba together when it was supposedly morning. When she is crying in the car, it is apparently late evening or night, and when she calls Shimraiz, he too is the “morning” zone. So what happened? Daneez was wearing a different coloured dress when she came to Mujtaba’s and when she cries in the car and later meets Shimraiz at the mall, she is wearing the same black dress in which she remained till the end of the episode, regardless of the number of days which had passed.

The sixth and seventh part of the episode was probably the most enjoyable – with everything that I had expected this serial to offer from Day 1: light romance, along with witty dialogues and a great chemistry between ALL the characters. Oh yes, I have been rather critical of Daneez but she finally did come to her senses, and the scenes where she and Mujtaba are planning to bring Kiran and Shimraiz together were hilarious. Shimraiz’s confession of love sounded more heartfelt than Mujtaba’s – and of course, while he and Daneez redeemed their relationship, it is clear that Shimraiz and Kiran will be bickering for many more days to come. (Why oh WHY did it end there? I would have LOVED to see them in some more scenes).

I can probably go on and on, but to end this at an optimistic note, I will recount some of the factors that kept this serial in the top five, AND made it a favourite of many loyal fans. (I have already noted too many mistakes/bloopers!)

1) Chemistry: At first, only Mujtaba and Kiran were sharing a great chemistry, with Shimraiz and Daneez paling in comparison. However, the Mujtaba-Shimraiz and Kiran-Shimraiz chemistry turned out to be just as excellent. Daneez, I felt, had very little chemistry with any other character, which is a pity because Aisha Khan did her best. In the end, it was simply a casting error. The tiffs between the other three characters were witty and gripping, and you just could NOT forward their scenes, regardless of how long they were. I do hope Fawad, Mikaal and Sanam return to do another serial next year.

2) Dialogues: I have said this before AND written a separate post on how praise-worthy the dialogues were, with great recall value. (In fact, I myself have picked up on the “donon baton main bohot farq hota hai” dialogue).

3) Show, not tell: Especially in the last two episodes, it was all about expressions and actions rather than straightforward talk.

4) Thinking caps ON: I have often wondered why other drama serials give us everything on a platter, leaving no room for imagination. This drama serial gave us plenty to talk about and discuss.

All in all, I am sorry that this serial has ended – my Sunday nights will be very boring now. BUT I do hope the team will learn from the mistakes we have pointed out in our reviews, and return with a blockbuster.

PS: A BIG thank you to all the readers, who read and commented on the episode reviews by me and SZ week after week. I know at least I irked you guys big time, especially Marvi, Muneeba, Kiran Malik and Sadaf, who were huge fans of this serial. But thank you for commenting, correcting and clarifying the “bloopers”.
