Written by Sana Fahad and Directed by Badar Mehmood, Koi Nahi Hai Apna’s first episode seems to be a story we have seen on television and in movies hundreds of times; Rich girl (Surwat Gilani as Alvia and middle class boy (Fahad Mustafa as Hamza). Their lives are as different as can be. Alvira drives a BMW, is a ‘hello Ma and Dad’ kind of girl, has the choice of going abroad to do her Masters, her parents (Sajid Hassan and Sabahat Bukhari) can throw ‘bohut bari parties’ like anything and take trips to countries like Geneva for the fun of it. She has no idea what life in middle class is like. Hamza grew up in a middle class family, ‘Assalam Alaikum Ammi’ type of boy, rides a motor bike to the University, has the ‘light chali gayi and pani nahi araha’ issues. He seems to have been brought up by a single mother (Ismat Zaidi).
Like I said, same story of boy meets girl in college and fall in love, but the typical twist of both sets of parents wanting different life partners for their kids. Alvira’s father wants her to meet up with his friend’s son, Zaka (who also happens to be her childhood friend) as he has just come back from abroad and wants to get them married. Hamza’s Ammi wants (as always) her bhanji to be her bahu. Both tell their parents “No Thank You” as they are interested in other people. Hamza’s Ammi seems more irate than Alvira’s parents, until they meet Hamza at the party they have thrown for their daughter. Here ends episode 1.
Even though the story has been recycled to no end, the reason it seems fresh is that every single person is very natural in their delivery and acting. There is absolutely no over the top acting. Fahad Mustafa and Surwat Gilani seem to have the chemistry needed for this to work and they definitely looked good together. I believe this is Sana Fahad’s first actual serial and her dialogues are very simple, which is really good. No complaints on direction either and that is why I think this recycled story will work.
Last but absolutely not the least, the decision to use Sajjad Ali’s song ‘Koi Nahi Hai Apna’ from back in the day is pure genius! It was a treat listening to it after so long. Well done to whomever’s decision this was :)
Looking forward to Episode 2!
