Just finished watching Kankar’s 4th episode and all I can is: WOW!
The one thing I find extremely interesting in Kankar is the way different characters are contrasted on the screen – thankfully, it is done in a more showing-than-telling manner, so even though the story barely moves forward in each installment, you do find yourself reflecting upon the comparisons!
Today, I was mentally comparing Adnan and Sikander. Both seem totally smitten by Kiran – that much was obvious. However, Sikander barely knows Kiran and his entire perception of her is based on what he has heard from Aarzoo combined with some chance-meetings. Honestly, I find it hard to digest the way he is so bowled over just because she chanced into his room by mistake and loves to eat Shadi ka Khana. On the other hand, there is Adnan, who has known Kiran all his life, knows her inside out and quite willingly panders to all her whims. So when it comes to who would be willing to go the extra mile for her, my bet is on Adnan.
I had wondered in the past two weeks what the relevance of Rukhsar’s track is to the overall story – and now I understand! Without Rukhsar and her issues, Adnan’s mom would not hesitate before sending a proposal for Kiran. Though financial issues are also a problem, the main thing is Rukhsar’s marriage being held up. And here there is another comparison: Rukhsar’s mother feels she cannot get Adnan married until Rukhsar is; however, she has loads of issues because Rukhsar’s mom-in-law-to-be has exactly the same issue. Which brings me to another similarity between Adnan and Sikander – they both seem to have caused ripples in their household just by mentioning Kiran, Sikander more than Adnan of course!
Sikander’s bombshell of course was the highlight of the episode. And like most households where sons drop such bombshells, the blame directly went to Kiran – SHE must have done something, SHE betrayed Aarzoo’s trust and so on and on. Kamal (Shakeel) was spot on when he said: Sikander koi doodh peeta bacha tou nahin hai! Again, similar to how things go in every other household, Kamal and Faiqa simply blamed each other’s relatives for the fiasco! Also, I find it odd that Faiqa and Aarzoo seem so cold and distant for a mother-daughter duo – Faiqa is worried only about saving face and ego! In strark contrast, the way Iram and Kiran’s mom scolds them and yet calls Kiran “miyan mitho” speaks volumes about the warm relationship the daughters share with their mother.
Like most serials where a bombshell is followed by talking and droning, this one was no different. Perhaps the saving grace of this ages-old story is the true to life depiction of characters, and the way they have been played. Sanam Baloch has breathed life into Kiran’s character; Maha Warsi has done a good job even though her expressions lack at times. Ismat Zaidi is brilliant as the ever-scolding mother. Hasan Niazi and Fahd Mustafa have not had much to do, but they both are very much into their characters. (For all those who feel Fahd Mustafa is a miscast, I disagree. Knowing how the story will go, he is perfect for this role!). Laila Zuberi so far is the weakest link for me. I don’t know why she is not clicking into this role at all. When Sikander tells her he does not want to marry Aarzoo, the shock doesn’t cause even one dent in her layer of foundation!
I can probably go on and on, which means overall, yes, it was another a review-worthy episode. Like Durreshehwar, I am enjoying this serial for all its true-to-life portrayal of characters, played commendably by the entire cast along with Umera Ahmed’s signature dialogues and a direction that is definitely a vast improvement on Aabis Raza’s previous work. Looking forward to the next installment already!
PS: One blooper I must mention: Last week’s preview showed Sikander watching Kiran have dinner and chat with Adnan at Shoaib’s wedding, and no such thing happened today!
