Humsafar – Episodes 3 and 4

I must admit I have been really lazy about reviewing Humsafar; the main reason I feel is the yet-to-come appearance of certain characters who were right there in the beginning of the novel. Yep! It is always a drawback to have read the novel because you end up comparing and contrasting more than needed.

However, after week 3 and 4, Ashar (Fawad Khan) and Khirad (Mahira Khan) are finally married and are trying to find some common ground it seems. While the entire cast has done an excellent job of portraying mixed emotions, I am finding a few things a little hard to digest.

First and foremost, Zareena (Hina Bayat) was spot on when she asked Ashar not to mix with Sarah (Navin Waqar) so much. She totally voiced my own thoughts over the first scene. I mean, why? Why would you still mingle and interact with your best-friend-for-whom-you-have-no-feelings, especially when you are married and especially when you know she loves you – to the extent that she actually tried to commit suicide. The novel was totally free of this entire track. Yes, Sarah used to run after Ashar but he was never actually buddies with her at any time.

On a more positive note, I am absolutely delighted with Mahira’s accurate portrayal of Khirad within the first few days of her marriage. Indeed, she depicted the exact behaviour of many girls as they interact – for the first few times – with their fiancés and even their husbands. There was the same awkwardness, refusal to look at each other in the eye, speaking in monosyllables – sigh, actually reminded me of…OK enough. But no wonder Ashar was so annoyed – Fawad Khan played that particular role to perfection. Of course, no one could blame him for staying late at the office, but going out with Sarah and venting out all his problems to her was a little unfair.

Overall, the previous two episodes have been jam-packed with action, what with Maimoona’s (Saba Faisal) death, Sarah’s attempt at suicide, Farida’s (Atiqa Odho) change of attitude towards Khirad and of course, Khirad and Ashar’s marriage. I am definitely looking forward to seeing their relationship develop in the upcoming episodes.
