Against my better judgement, I had a few hopes attached to this weeks episode. The promo promised some progress in the story, so I was cautiously optimistic. To be fair; the story did progress but the episode as a whole was again not much to look at.
Credit goes to Maria for creating some much needed ripples in this otherwise stagnant story. Initially Maria was presented as a somewhat Bongi larki but with time, we have witnessed the shades in this character. She is cunning, she did the unthinkable, something that even the heroine GR could not do. She trapped Adeel in a way that even he couldn’t imagine. Her plan worked and now for the first time, Adeel is not in control. His father is now doubting him and he is collecting evidence and testimonies against his own son. In a way, Maria has proven to be a very interesting character, it is because of her that Adeel will finally have to come face to face with his dark side and for that reason, Maria deserves a lot more credit than GR.
As for GR, like her husband she too has double standards and in a way, she is also a hypocrite. She is self-righteous and loves to preach morality and religion, she dosen’t approve of young women interacting with (na-maihram) men, yet she asked Ashir bhai to submit her dues, when she could have easily gone to the university with her driver to do so herself. She dosen’t mind sitting alone with him but dosen’t think it’s appropriate when her husband does it with his cousins and friends. She didn’t like it when Maria came to visit Adeel but she herself went to live at Ashar’s home after his fathers death; When it should have been Muneera and not her.
Muneera is the weirdest mother on TV. First she started yelling at GR for not being a good wife, when she didn’t even know what was the real problem. She refused to even listen to her own daughter, this attitude is unreasonable. Even if she was not happy with her daughter’s decision of coming to Karachi, she should have at least talked to her about it, instead of just yelling at her and blaming her for being ungrateful. Second thing, her damaad is being accused by his own cousin of sexual exploitation and she just stands there supporting him ? Not once did she thing, OK this is why GR dosen’t want to live with him ? OMG I have married my daughter off to a rapist ! She started supporting/defending him even when his own father wasn’t taking his side. The most bizarre point, when Maria’s mother left, it was Muneera who went after them to stop them. Hellooooo its not your place to do that, its not your house, its not your son and Maria is not even related to you. At that point, she was still cursing her own daughter for not being there to support Adeel. All that craziness made me wish, it was Muneera who had died and not her husband. Her husband was a decent man, who treated her with respect but she has forgotten all that. She dosen’t want the same for her daughter but wants her to be a doormat. Quite an inspirational mother, if you ask me.
I do not understand why GR was staying at her khala’s house. Yes, in such situations family members help each other out but keep in mind she is married and if her uncle does not approve of Marias staying at his own son’s house, I don’t think he would approve of his own DILs staying at her khalas house without her husbands knowledge. When GRs mother called her to come back, her response was senseless. ” Ager Adeel mayra poochain gay to main aa jaown ge ?” was she trying to provoke him ? ignore him ? tell him, i dont care about you ? Remember, she is the ” good girl “, she should have thought about her taya abbus reaction. In normal households it is the elder ladies who go to stay with relatives at such times and not newly married young women.
What is the deal with Ashar bhai ? Is he married by now or not ? Does he know about his cancer or not ? Why so much confusion ? That little argument he had with Adeel was unnecessary, what gave him the right to stop GR ? it should have been his mother or sister. If he knows about his cancer, then instead of running errands for GR, he should encourage her to be independent.
It was Kamal Ahmed who was acting sensibly. He was asking MAria to come back, he knew things would get messy if she didn’t . When noone listened to him, he decided to take matters in his own hands. Finally, after his son had been accused of exploiting his ( Kamal Ahmeds ) niece, did it occur to him to get to the bottom of things. The question answer session with the servants left me confused. They said MAria had been living with Adeel but we know that Adeel has been very careful as to not leave any clues, so how did they find out ?
For now, its hard to say where this story is gonna go from here. I am hoping Adeel will get married to Maria and it will be the end of this drama :). But obviously, this was the 16th episode so, abhi sabr k imtehaan aur bhe hain.
