Gul-E-Rana…Episode 12

12 weeks down and Adeel’s attitude is getting worse with each passing week. The writer didn’t give us any idea as to why Adeel is the way he is, he is from a good home, respected family and is educated, then what is the reason behind his sick attitude ? Why does he think ” saari aurtain aik jaise ( corrupt ) hi hoti hain “, ” ager us ka shoher ussay maarta hai, to ussi main koi fault ho gi ? “. Does he have any childhood issues ?

Another golden quote from our very own bad boy hero/ villain ” ager mugh main koi masla hai to ussay theak kero “. A piece of advice to Adeel and his admirers…your spouse is not your psychologist, they are neither qualified nor responsible for your mental health issues, if you are entering a relationship, particularly marriage then get your act together before entering it. I think this Jerry McGuire thinking ” you complete me ” has done a lot of damage, in a country where we spend months at times years planning for ” weddings “, nobody takes the time to  discuss ” marriage ” with their children. Young men and women get all kinds of ideas from romantic novels and movies and this notion of another person coming into your life and fixing all of your problems is not only juvenile but absolutely ridiculous. People need to take responsibility for their own actions and if they need professional help, they should contact a professional rather than relying on their partner.

As a character I absolutely despise Adeel but in this episode, the writer did use him to highlight a very common practice. In our society men manipulate religion to have their own way. Adeel lecturing GR on Isalm main shoher ko ” Mijaazi Khuda ” ka Darja deya Jana was something that left me dumbfounded. The man never practices any Islamic teachings but when it comes to pressurizing his wife, he is more than willing to drag religion into their argument.

Every week after watching the episode I read the viewers’ comments and this week it was so refreshing to see some people finally seeing Adeel for who he really is. A man who has been torturing his wife, cheating on her, a rapist and now he is staining his own wife’s reputation. A control freak who is isolating her, making sure nobody comes to her help and most importantly…she knows that. She knows she is alone and there is nowhere to go…the mindset of a psycho.

Maria is still under Adeel’s spell and her mother’s approval is making things worse. Why would a respectable middle age woman encourage her young, naive and silly daughter to woo a married man ? Specifically when he dumped her and married another girl and then she is sending her to his home, does she really think it is a good idea to send her daughter to live with Adeel in his home like that ?

GER’s behavior makes no sense to me. She is never at a loss for words, but whenever her life/reputation is at stake, she chooses to zip her mouth, why ? She was talking to her cousin, who she considers her brother when Adeel accused her. Her Taya Abbu was all ears…more than willing to give her a chance to clear her position but she choose to stay quiet. She is not helping her own situation. It was good to know that she is still studying at home and she has sense enough to know her marriage isn’t gonna last long and in the end it will be her education that is going to help things but why not use that same good sense when it comes to taking a stand for herself ? Atleast her Taya Abbu would be confused as to who is right, Adeel or GER… that would give her a benefit of doubt if nothing else . That scene where she is running home, holding her servant’s hand…what was that all about ?

Sajal and Feroz have done a fabulous job as GER and Adeel. These two are the main attractions of the show and this week Feroz was phenomenal. Although it is still hard to ignore those  ” orange shoes, tiny hat and too big for him muffler ” and yes, I still hate that bracelet and hair but despite of that Feroz Khan left his mark. Sundas  is also doing complete justice to Maria. The editing and camera work ( on the mountains ) was still sloppy and I can’t see how ( if ever ) Adeel will be able to redeem himself.
