Netflix’s holiday family film Greater Kalesh is a warm story about home, growing up, and the messiness that comes with both.

Twinkle (Ahsaas Channa) surprises her family by visiting for Diwali. She expects a picture perfect holiday. But as soon as she enters, chaos greets her instead. Twinkle is disturbed at the constant arguments.  But maybe this mess -the kalesh- is exactly what she needs to step out of her self-involved bubble.

Her brother, Ankush Handa (Poojan Chhabra), is at odds with their anxiety-ridden mother, played by Supriya Shukla, while their father struggles to mediate. The family argues about Ankush dating an older woman, and the devastating news that this is their last Diwali in the family home, lost to a bad investment. In its short runtime, the film packs a lot: a father who feels he has failed as a provider and “can’t even look them in the eye,” a mother whose life has revolved around her home and whose sense of identity is shaken when it is lost.

The film has heart, humor, and moments of insight but what makes it truly shine is Twinkle’s character arc. At the start, she is focused only on her own plans. By the end, she has grown empathy: she invites her mother to stay with her in Bangalore, realising that they have far more in common than she ever imagined.

Twinkle enters with the memories of a child, expecting familiarity, but leaves with the maturity to care for her mother and a greater understanding of her role in the family.

This journey of growth forms the soul of the film: realizing that family doesn’t exist to cater to individual whims, but that love and responsibility go hand in hand.

Greater Kalesh celebrates the imperfections of family.

Unlike Hum Saath Saath Hain or Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Greater Kalesh doesn’t idealise obedience or place a patriarch on a pedestal. This is a family of equals…or it’s trying to be. They embrace Karan (not Karina) her brother’s older partner. They discover that all along the father has been quietly ferreting away their prized possessions in a new home. A home that with a nameplate for his wife.

It was through conflict, not avoidance, that they discovered the true strength of their family.
