Omar still has a lot of growing up to do and while he may be married to Mohini – she seems to be filling in Mrs Imtiaz’s shoes. It’s no secret that most women have to mother their hubbies too and it’s no wonder desi men grow up entitled and expecting others to pick up the slack(s) – literally.
How is any man who needs this much hand holding going to be attractive after a point? I’m going out on a limb and say this is going to be a point of contention, even if all they are living on love and fresh air (theoretically speaking). Eager to drop the Hashmi name and prefixes, Jr/Sr both Omar isn’t making much headway even in things under his control. Though he has an empty wallet, he still harbors impractical dreams of owning a new car, giving his wife and saas an aish-o-aram and kitty party scene ki zindagi.
His job on a platter notwithstanding, Omar is in many ways a child dependent on Mohini, emotionally, financially and practically. Well at least he isn’t a spoilt brat
That title firmly belongs to Adnan under whose aegis Omar gets a job. His barging into Sr. Hashmi’s office and their conversation reeked of spoilt rich kid throwing his weight around. Though somehow his wanting to buy Hashmi Group of companies as well as tell Sr Hashmi to leave Omar alone is a bit farfetched even if it was his ego that got bruised in Sr Hashmi trying to buy him off.
I don’t get the big deal about his background unless it is to underline the point about government being more powerful than businessmen. Point noted. Adnan’s bravado stems from his father’s money and place in society so therefore he can get away with murder and/or insult. In imbuing Adnan with deeper psyche which I appreciate, it would be nice to tone down his sense of entitlement. But then again, desi male problem.
Points for effort in the visual telling however, I like the way they tried to isolate Adnan in the crowd, but in the next shot, there is a totally different lighting and feel. Either way Gohar Rasheed is giving stiff competition to Osman Khalid Butt and perhaps even coming out on top.
Everyone seems to be fleeing for now – Ali to Dubai, and Zara off to holiday rehab and Nomi advising Mohini to go AWOL. Zara for her part is leaving behind a trail of broken hearts and key information to Mohini about the Hashmi’s sushing Omar’s marriage as a ‘trip to the US’.
For now Goya has a steady pace and jokes about first day of school bring in a certain light heartedness to the story. Good writing, good humour and good acting all make Goya one good drama to look forward too.
