The other title to this week’s episode should have been “Takra gaya tum sey dil he tho hai Roy na ye kiyun Ghayal hi tho hai” …. There were quite a few wounded hearts strewn about this episode. Mohini is making her first actual news report and is caught in a bomb blast, which seem a sadly common occurrence in Pakistani cities. Junior Hashmi is as usual pretending to …..ahem ‘work’ in his fancy office and sees the event unfolding before his eyes on the now requisite, large LCD TV . He immediately jumps into action as only his father’s son could. He has connections and resources and he knows exactly how to use them. Where is Mohini? Mohini’s few hours off the radar are moments of revelation; Omar Hashmi is lost without her but true to his caring nature he tries to comfort her mother. This is the wonderful thing about Omer’s character, just because he is wealthy he may be spoiled, but he is not automatically unkind or mean-spirited. Nor is he into using women as toys, if anything he seems a little in awe of Mohini, so much for stereotypes.
Meanwhile Nomi the cameraman is sitting bhooka /pyassa waiting for Mohini’s return and here we have wounded heart number one. In most dramas this would have had me in hysterics but the director has crafted these threads so subtly and Ahmed Saheb has written Mohini so well that I can well believe that any Man who meets her might easily fall in love with her.
Mohini is not just pretty; she is a woman with character and personality. It is quite obvious she is attracted to Omer and it is obvious that men are attracted to her yet she sets the limits of her interactions with a grace rarely seen on screen. She is not afraid to go out with Omer as a friend but takes her mother warnings about the trouble such a relationship will inevitably create .Sana Javaid is fabulous as Mohini, modern and spirited but also kind and sensible. I say sensible because even though Omer Hashmi has realized he is in love with her, he has yet to make any kind of objection to the marriage his father is busy planning for him to the slightly dubious Zara. Now I think I love Zara even more than Mohini. Now here is a true free spirit, not really bothered that much about the way her father is bartering away her life, smoking what may well be weed in her prospective in laws back garden and nonchalantly offering her would be groom a joint. The expressions on Osman’s face were priceless ……………. Played so smoothly by the always lovely Hira Tareen, Zara really isn’t as bad as she should be; more lost than wicked but perhaps that will change. However even she has picked up on the fact that Omer is’ just not that into her’ ….wounded heart number two.
So despite falling politely into marriage and a date with Zara, Omer also wants to have lunch with Mohini. One of the joys of this episode are the Mohini /Omer scenes. I just loved their conversation in the car and at the failed Chinese Lunch. Now remember the song lyric I wrote at the beginning of the review? As Osman refuses to overact or ruin the scene with melodrama I will do it for him … Takra gaya tum sey dil hi tho hai ….you know the rest. Apart from slightly heavy hand on the “lost in thought “moment at the beginning of the episode Osman Khalid But is a pleasure to watch. Refreshingly, he actually underplays the melodrama, allowing the character and the audience to breathe. Yes, he knows he is in love but he is not yet sure enough to fight for it or even be defiant. This ambivalence is a reality for most people rather than the sudden ‘drop of a hat’ life changing decisions we are told to accept in many dramas.
The director Faiz, the writers Mohammed Ahmed Saheb and Yasir Rana (who wrote some of the dialogues …please correct me If I get things wrong ) have so far managed to make this a must watch every Saturday. The hall mark of all my favourite dramas is their ability to make you sad one minute, smile in the next and laugh out loud in the third. Not all directors or writers possess this ability but here it :is one minute I am worried about Mohini and Omer , the next Zara has me smiling then the quiet conversation between wonder boy Junaid and Omer Hashmi has me in stitches .
PS ..I see Gohar Rasheed is going to be in this drama … what’s a girl to do Osman AND Gohar Rasheed on the screen at the same time … sensory overload .. systems failure imminent……
