Gul-E-Rana…Last Episode

The last episode went onair tonight and as is becoming Hum TV’s bad habit, they dragged the story for as long as they possibly could, wasted screen time with repetitive scenes and then ended it abruptly. The end felt rushed, it was the last episode, they tried to show Adeel’s transition, Asher Bhai’s long over due and impending death scene, GER’s delimma and Muneera’s concern…so they tried to pull  it off in this one episode. Some scenes worked, others not so much and still there were some that could have been avoided.

Since this was the last episode, so let’s take a minute to discuss the overall story. At the end Adeel did mend his ways, he felt remorse and decided to become a better person. If this guy was not a wife beater and a rapist, I would have been on Team Adeel after this episode, He was clearly making an effort to prove to GR he was not the same man he once was. His attempts at flirtation, trying to show his concern for GR , asking her to take gifts for Ashar and his family all went to show he had changed and was begging her to give him another chance. At this point I was wishing the writer had made a few changes in the script earlier on, so it would have been so easy to trust and forgive him now. For instance if Adeel had not married GR at gun point but had tactfully handled both their families and had come up with some sneaky plan, if he had not physically  abused GR, had not attacked his female friend…but had other character flaws, it could have been easier for both GR and me to forgive him.

Like I have been saying all along, it is Feroz and Sajal’s acting that is the strongest point in this drama and the chemistry they share, that keeps the viewers intrested. Again, Feroz Khan gave a very convincing performance as a man who is in love but is ashamed of his previous conduct , he wants to be forgiven but is giving his wife the freedom to choose for herself. The scene at the bridge and the conversation they had after his friend left were done really well…they clearly showed the delimma Adeel was going through. He was trying to see if GR would still take him back, if he could explain his actions and she could forgive him.

Ashar Bhai’s death and its after effects could have been devastating had the point of his death not been dragged to death. It was like the ” sher aaya, sher aaya …” story, the impact had been lost, we knew what was coming but I was still not willing to believe it till I see it, since Hum Tv had already fooled us atleast 3 times before with the news of his death.

I felt the absence of the majority of the cast, did they not have the budget to pay them or was that also a weak point in the script. I felt the absence of Asher’s mother, why was she missing  ? Where were Kamal Ahmed and Maria , why was Maria’s angle simply ignored after a point ? So many Questions were left unanswered. Did Adeel and GR get divorced ? If GR did not come back , what about the adults in the family, did they not try to intervene ? Why did GR not join her Taya’s office , why teach in a school ?

GR left an unhappy marriage and decided to give her life a fresh start but the way it was done, did not do much to explain her reasons. It would have been much better if she could have discussed her future plans as well as her reasons for leaving Adeel with someone like Alia or Kamal Ahmed . I also believe GR and Adeel should have had a heart to heart, that would have made a lot more sense and answered a lot of questions, Audiences were left guessing .

That scene with the servant’s damaad, well it was supposed to be impressive but it wasn’t. We were only told what by that point, we already knew, Adeel was a changed man…then why not put your ego aside and go and talk to your wife ? Why just sit there and wait ?

There was a scene I did not get, what was Adeel doing at the party when GR called him . He was supposed to be a changed man, so why give GR the chance to doubt him ? The hand holding scene was also stretched till it became creepy and uncomfortable, the editing was again faulty. But with all its faults and flaws, this serial had been getting the highest ratings, the credit basically goes to the talented and good looking lead pair, other cast members were not given much to do but still most of them did a decent job, particularly Sundas Tariq as Maria. I don’t know how people will remember this drama in the long run but I will most likely remember it as the drama in which Feroz Khan committed the most atrocious crimes against fashion in the recorded human history and also as a drama that glamorized and sold Abuse.
