When I decided to watch and review GER, i had no idea it was gonna be so hard. I thought it would be a piece of cake, since I did not connect with any of the characters, the script and characters were not worth taking serious, so I could just watch it and review it…easy. Now, it’s becoming more of a ” splitting headache “, sitting through an episode is the hardest part.
So Adeel the hero/villain/Psycho has added another feather to his cap…he is now also a rapist. Marital rape is by no means something you can take lightly, it is a crime but the way it was incorporated in the story showed it as something very normal and natural. As if it is not even worth raising eyebrows over. It is shocking the way Pakistani dramas are presenting rape to be something very ” routine ” . Not just the direction and script but also the characters did not seem to take this crime seriously. GER calls Adeel ghatiyya and that’s it, she is over it. For God’s sake, stop using rape as a means to sensationalize the story and get higher TRPs, it’s not a joke.
To all the girls who are still going ” GaGa ” over Adeel, a few interesting facts. Adeel is a psycho, a control freak, he is exhibiting all the characteristics of the guys who in the long run end up murdering their wives. He forced GER into marrying him, he raped her while she was sleeping under the influence of sleeping pills, he is isolating her from people she trusts, is controlling her every move and is even threatening to tarnish her reputation…all these characteristics are present in ” wife killers ” who are on the police’s ” most wanted list “. So, if this is the guy you are dreaming of, think again.
Usually we are hoping that the lead couple in any drama would get more screen time but in this episode I was so hopping to get a break from GER and Adeel’s constant presence. They were every where and most of the scenes made no sense at all. The writer is just cashing in on Feroze and Sajal’s screen presence as the story had nothing to offer…the dialogues were meaningless and the episode was full of unnecessary scenarios. One thing I have been constantly noticing is that they start an argument, try to create hype and then just leave it…it disappears, we donot get to see the end result. Adeel was so adamant on taking GER to dinner in a ” black sari ” and then, nothing. GER is fighting the world over her right to get an education, Adeel is opposing it and then she is in college…we don’t know how or when that happened.
The supporting cast was mostly missing from the action, we got occasional glimpses of Taya Abbu but he didn’t have anything to add to the story, Muneera to lagta hai bayte ko rukhsat ker k Hajj pay challi gaie hain. Zafri was also nowhere to be seen and Laila and Hamna didn’t get more than a few lines. Although the ” annoying khalu ” did make an appearance, that scene was also useless.
Adeel’s phoppo’s are now joining forces to get whatever they can and to sabotage Adeel and GER’s marriage. Well, atleast they are consistent, Maria is still under Adeel’s spell and her mother and Khala’s encouragement is further pushing her towards him. Like most ” two faced ” people, living doubles lives, Adeel is doing a great job fooling his father, his family and at the same time he is living his double life successfully, I wish I could say he is a complex character and I like him ( as a well knit character ) but alas , despite of Feroze Khan’s good acting Adeel’s expressions and emotions are limited. As a character, he dosen’t have any depth.
GER’s reaction to her marriage and assault is weird. The girl was sexually abused ( even if she was not conscious at the time ) by her husband and she just got over it, just like that. She is trying to continue her education, argue with her husband, keeping up appearances and then she keeps trying to get in touch with Ashir Bhai. I get it, she needs someone to confide in, to talk to , to ask for advice but she knows what kind of person Adeel is and her constant contact with Ashir could get him in trouble. Why not try to be a little smart about it, talk to him over the phone when she is in college instead of meeting him. Ashir was initially presented as a sensible guy, now he is acting all weird. He knows Adeel dosen’t like him and he is GER’s husband, so just keep your distance, get your sister to talk to GER if it is so urgent but no…that would make this character consistent and rational and everyone in this drama makes any sense.
I am amazed this drama is getting the highest ratings, judging from the viewers’ comments they just watch Sajal and Feroz and are not at all concerned with the script, editing, dialogues, the violence in the story and the message it is sending to the viewers. I am so hoping this serial ends at 20 episodes, cause by the look of things, the story isn’t gonna move in any positive direction, GER and Adeel’s relationship is gonna be rocky till the end and after all that has been said and done, I am convinced Adeel’s character cannot be redeemed.
