\” Yeah Shadi hai, Kum Aqal loag is main bohat kaamyaab raihnay hain, zayyada Aqal shadi k leyay nuksaanday hoti hai \”. Farwa\’s mom\’s words of wisdom :). The dialogues are a very strong point of this story. Wisdom, wit, humor, life lessons; you name it…this play offers a complete range. \” Ilm hasil kerna ker musalmaan mard aur aurat per Farz hai \”. The Ba-mahawara Urdu is also something we don\’t see very often but the parhay-likhay loag and the parhi-likhe writer makes good use of that \” Wo to ussay jootiyoon main paihntte hai aur chutkeyoun main urratti hai \”.
The blend of the serious or should I say catastrophic and the hilarious is done to perfection. You can\’t tell where the tragedy ends and when the comedy begins. Farwa\’s mother is about to tell her husband their daughter is missing on the day of her engagement, when she finds out that her future son-in-law is also missing. The panic mode turns into relief and she very casually tells her husband \” Khana khulwatay hain, maihmaano ko Khana khilatay hain, phir ghoor karain gay is maslay per \”. Irsa Ghazal was simply marvelous in this scene. Talk about being unconventional parents, when Junaid\’s mother heard about his marriage with Aasma, her calm n cool response \” Mayra bayte hamesha goal achieve ker k hi raihta hai \” with a hint of pride in it was hilarious.
It\’s amazing how things and circumstances change and the way, they change our response to life changing events. If only Farwa had not eloped with Sir Mustansar, Saeed sahab and his wife\’s reaction to Junaid and Asmaa\’s elopement would have been completely different. On the contrary, begum Saeed\’s \” yeah to shuker hai k tum nay Junaid say shadi ker li warna hum in loogoon ko Kya moun dikhatay\”. From culprit, Aasma Ghaznavi had suddenly become the hero, who saved the day.
The overall mood of the play is light, lively and entertaining but the discussion of the serious issues is also there. It is done in a way to minimize the tension level and yet still talk about the main problem. Farwa wants to avoid her exam and for this she wants to get married. The pressure is immense and still she is not dumb, she can see that both she and Junaid are not compatible, if she marries him she will never be able to be herself. Plus he is only marrying her cause to him, she is a replica or substitute of the great and unachievable Aasma Ghaznavi; his one true love.
Women are women, Junaid\’s mother can\’t help but appreciate Aasma\’s wedding dress :) even in such extreme circumstances :). Amna Mufti gives the viewers a complete insight into the psyche of these upper middle class women, whose chit chat revolves around their servants\’ weaknesses, their family\’s medical history and of course match making for their kids.
I don\’t know what to make of Aasma, she stole her cousins fiancé right on their engagement day and when she saw her mamaani in distress she decided to stay with her and take care of her. Leave it to the practical Aasma to rationalize an other wise entirely irrational situation, the way she explained Farwa\’s elopement, her marriage and her future … It was nothing short of sheer genius. While Farwa\’s parents were still in shock, Aasma gave them reason to celebrate. She is proud and will never let Junaid forget even for a second how lucky he is to be married to \” the great, the amazing, the highly qualified, the one and only Aasma Ghaznavi \”.
As I was watching \” Farwa\’s adventure\”, as you may call it, I couldn\’t help but feel sorry for poor Googi. He is one person with whom Farwa can be herself and who loves her for who she is but alas thanks to his academic qualification MBBF ( matric baar baar fail ), he knows only too well that his proposal will not be accepted by Farwa\’s parents. But after watching the promo of the next episode, I am now convinced these two \” evil master minds \” are a perfect match.
I am just amazed at Amna Mufti\’s command on the script. All the characters have so much to offer, there is not one character that is there only for the sake of it, they all have real, interesting and important roles to play. In a time when our TV screens are being ruled by cliched characters, this drama offers a brilliant mix of unconventional and brilliantly thought out characters.
The background score compliments the light mood of the story. Thanks to the attention paid to every aspect of the play, there is never a dull moment.
I do have one problem with this play, that is if I have to find a fault, I would like to know how did Farwa convince an experienced and mature man like Sir Mustansar to marry her in less than 24 hours. He didn\’t even like her and then how did they both find time to go dress shopping and decorate the house.
Other than that, for me this play so far is a complete package. All the actors are doing a fabulous job, the touch of music and classical dance was a really good idea and it is so intricately woven into the story that it has become a part of it and dosent look odd. The script and direction have been worked really hard on and it shows. I am so looking forward to the next episode, do share your views.
