Express Delivers a Rare Treat With Mohalla

Don't miss out Instagram

Let’s admit it, we don’t tune in to Express for dramas very often. But Mohalla is a chaotic caper that stands out. A neighborhood is full of well-meaning characters eager to gossip about everything from upcoming marriages to sudden scandals. Their chatter is never mean-spirited, and the humor they bring feels instantly familiar to anyone who has lived in a close-knit community.

At the center of their speculation is Shamsa (Mehar Bano), set to marry Junaid, her much older fiancé played by Javed Sheikh. Junaid is the quintessential “unclejee” wealthy, smitten, and desperate to please his young bride-to-be. He showers her with diamond rings and even rides in on a horse for the baraat. In Javed Sheikh’s hands, Junaid comes across as both ridiculous and strangely pitiable, a man who commands laughter and sympathy at once.

But the real drama begins on the wedding night, when Shamsa mysteriously disappears. Was she kidnapped? Did she run away with her no-good boyfriend? Or could Junaid himself be hiding something?

We are introduced to a colorful cast of potential suspects: an eager YouTuber desperate to go viral, three sisters who can’t stop gossiping about the upcoming marriage and Shamsa’s disappearance, and even a petty criminal who’s on family terms with the bride. Waseem is a young man obsessed with marrying Shamsa. Her mother tells the police she suspects him, and before long he’s hauled into the station, tortured, and accused. But audiences know better. Waseem is innocent, his suffering only deepening the mystery of Shamsa’s vanishing act.

Directed by Adnan Wai Qureshi, also an experienced editor, the drama benefits from slick pacing that keeps the story tight and engaging. The ensemble cast nails the mohalla’s blend of warmth and nosiness, while a breezy soundtrack by Shuja Haider and Alycia Dias underscores the show’s playful energy.

With its mix of scandal, humor, and suspense, Mohalla proves surprisingly watchable. Don’t expect anything deep or meaningful, this is pure fun.
