Aap Ki Izzat gets something right about female rage that many dramas miss. Rage is not just a destructive emotion, sometimes...

Raqaas Has Some Terrible Parents

There are no slammed doors in Dilawar’s house. No loud music. No carefree laughter. Not even the simple pleasure of standing outside when it rains. Instead, everyone tiptoes. In Raqaas, Green TV’s latest exploration of honour, misogyny and domestic control, fear has become so thoroughly embedded in a family that

ARY Kabhi Kabhi

Kabhi Kabhi Episode 10

This episode was rather interesting, thankfully Ishal is finally speaking up and playing the game as it is supposed to be played, I mean instead of being apologetic before her mother-in-law and sister-in-law she is dealing with them smartly, just the way I had wanted her, the scene where her...

ARY Shuk

Shuk Episide 5 Review

Shak continues to engage with its well balanced, fast paced narrative. This episode introduces Zara, ‘Sham’s sister with a presumably special needs child, precipitating Ammi’s exit, a runway Rumi and insights into Ali’s character. I really appreciate the fact that this drama touches, however fleetingly...

Snooze fest Karachi

Impressed by Sabiha Sumar’s earlier film Khamosh Pani with its strong script and poignant take on Pakistani politics, although admittedly sometime sketchy direction, I was intrigued enough to want to see Good Morning Karachi at the 3rdi film festival despite its rather predictable plot. Intrigued enough,...

ARY Shuk

Shuk Episode 4 Review

Of all the gaalis in all the world, she walks into mine. That’s probably what ‘Sham is thinking as Seher begins to get more involved in Sania’s life. Seher true to form marches back to Sania’s to apologize for ‘Sham’s interference and convinces her to take a breather and a midnight stroll. Sania and...

ARY Shuk

Shuk Episode 2 and 3 Review

Shak-deceit that begets deceit and the layers of distrust go deep. So far the tightly scripted narrative is moving at a fast pace. Since this is a first look, a recap of the story and cast is in order. Shak introduces us to Sehrish/Seher (Aisha Khan) and Itesham/Sham (Adeel Hussain), a happily...

ARY Kabhi Kabhi

Kabhi Kabhi Episode 8

This was quite a boring episode except for the part that Ishal finally talked it out with Araiz or rather tried to about his mother and sister’s behaviour towards her and also how she deserves to be treated properly and deserves some respect. I am glad she did because this was very much needed....

Geo TV Numm

Numm Episode 10

My opinion: Despite all my annoyances and anger with Numm at times, I am still enraptured to a large degree by the array of emotions projected by its characters. Writer Myra Sajid has created such formidable situations for them that they find a hard place to escape from each other. Its interesting that...

ARY Kabhi Kabhi

Kabhi Kabhi Episode 7

Poor Ishal! She has to go through so much but since she’s naive she always sees the best in the other person, sometimes I wish she was as clever as her sister-in-law, at least life would have been easier for her in sasural. She buys gifts for her in-laws but since her sister-in-law likes finding...

Geo TV Mujhe Khuda Pe Yakeen Hai

Mujhe Khuda Pe Yaqeen Hai Overview (Episodes 1-11)

Many Pakistani dramas show hardships faced by women in our culture. Sometimes, they deal with inequality, sometimes infamy, and so on. But our dramas seldom show what hardships men may have to face in our culture and society. That is what is different about this drama. ‘Mujhe Khuda Pe Yaqeen Hai’...

ARY Shuk

Shuk Episode 1 Review

Over the past weekend I decided to catch a new drama on ARY that had started. There is a deluge of dramas these days but none have really kept me interested and so am hoping Shukk is an exception. I was excited to watch this as it has two of my favourite actors Adeel Hussain and Sanam Saeed, and...
