Khoobsurat is a typical Disney movie;: in which all the messy details of life are packaged into bright little parcels for the audience to digest with ease . Sonam Kapoor over acts her way through this pleasant romp as Dr Milli Chakravorty the Physiotherapist assigned to help a Raja Shekhar Singh Rathore recover from an injury he has been nursing for ten years. After defeating forty physiotherapists before her , the Raja finally meets his match in the Klutzy , outspoken Milli who is determind to get him back on his feet . Enter the stuffy Prince Vikram Singh Rathore played with just the perfect amount of intensity by Fawad Afzal Khan. Without giving away too much the plot revolves around the interaction between Mili and Vikram, who in true Romantic comedy fashion are polar opposites, puzzled by their increasing attraction for each other. There were a lot of great scenes between these two but the funniest was the first when they accidentally meet in ….bed. Fawad and Sonam have great chemistry and looked cute together.
This film is a thoroughly modern take on romance. Mili is a nice Indian girl who has had her fare share off breakups and boyfriends, who did not understand her outspoken, act first, think later ways. If anyone is shy it is stuffy , formal royal “we” using Prince Vikram ,who like the rest of his family stopped having fun after his brother died in an accident ten years ago. Like all Disney fare the story is light weight but it’s strength are the solid performances from Fawad Khan, Ratna Patak and Aamir Raza Hussain which make it all work.
Without doubt, the main attraction in this movie is Fawad Khan and he never disappoints. Anyone who has watched him in Khuda key leeye can testify to his talent for playing , difficult , serious roles .Here he proves his versatility by giving Vikram Singh just enough depth to provide a foil to Sonam Kapoor’s flaky Mili and just enough light so you can understand how even opposites can attract. Sonam looks gorgeous (as does Fawad ) and does a more than passable job as Mili but she needed to give just alittle more control in her performance to make her character believable.
My main complaint about this movie has to be the totally light weight script. The story was simple but good and it could have been given a lot more depth and nuance rather than concentrating on Mili dancing and drinking with the servants. One kissing scene should have been enough, but when there was nothing in the script for the actors to do or say,so I suppose they had to fill the screen time with something. My last gripe is the copious amounts of alcohol being consumed on screen without consequence. I am not naïve to propose it not be shown but in the last few Bollywood movies I have watched it seems excessive to the point that it distracts from the storyline. In America Mili would be considered an alcoholic.
Apart from that this film is well directed and a must watch especially for the millions of Fawad fans across the globe.
I just wish we could see this level of quality in a Pakistani Production but with the depth a good writer can provide .
