Good News: Wali is safe Bad news: Wali is still playing mind games with Faraa
Good News: Roohi has finally come to her senses Bad News: Arjumand has just decided it’s her turn to throw a hissy fit.
While we are all rejoicing that the bullet only grazed Wali, I think the real tragedy may be that it didn’t hit Moiz because if it had, we could all say Alhumdollillah and heave a sigh of relief. Just in case anyone is naïve enough to think we are actually done with the awful Tajamuls, we get a few scenes of the totally unrepentant Moiz in prison begging his father to help him get out of jail. Sadly for Moiz, his father is such a cheapskate I doubt he will post bail. I almost felt sorry for Moiz, the way his father was telling him off, when the root cause of the whole mess is Uncle Tajamul himself; Moiz just took the baton he was handed and ran with it. After earning so much absolute hate for his character Ahmed Zeb really deserves a round of applause for a job well done.
Most of this episode was about Roohi and her moment of self-realization. I really liked the mother and daughter conversation. Faraa really is her father’s daughter, not afraid to stand up to her mother, not afraid to face up to her own mistakes and apologize to Wali or Agha Jan. Roohi has always been an unforgiving person so has little expectation of forgiveness in return. Her first instinct is to run and hide from her own self-created mess. This week’s episode was all about Roohi and for the most part Sanam Saeed did not disappoint. Roohi’s character has not exactly been full of nuance and Sanam Saeed has played the one basic note she was given consistently and well. Roohi’s apology to Agha Jan was excellent, could not have asked for more but she really needs to apologise to Wali and Arjumand and most of all to her own daughter. Roohi’s saving grace has always been that she really did love Behroz above anything else and her one excuse was that her entire world fell apart when he died. Sanam Saeed and Maya Ali share a good rapport and though there isn’t a huge age gap between the two actresses, they pulled of the mother /daughter act well. It was nice to see Mikaal oops Behroz in the flashbacks, wish we could see some Suhaib too; it would make a nice change from all the weeping.
Meanwhile Empress Arjumand has suddenly decided to draw a line in the sand between Wali and Faraa. Hareem Farooq is way too young to play anyone’s mother but she has done a simply fabulous job with Arjumand giving her character a powerful screen presence. This week all of Arjumand’s pent up frustrations bubbled over and if the scene had not been so serious I could have almost laughed. Bechari Arjumand I could have told you what a Zan Mureed Wali Suhaib Khan is quite a few episodes ago .Every mother has to let go of their child at some point , look at Roohi she gave up on Faraa some time ago .. On the one hand I can totally understand where Arjumand is coming from : first the batamees mother snatches your fiancé ( don’t lie that you don’t care it was Mikaal For god sake), then the same lady and her daughter treat your perfect son just as badly . If I had a Chand sa beta like Wali there is no way I would let Roohi or her daughter within ten feet of him. Arjumand really has not seen much of Faraa to know anything good about her and surprisingly for Farhat Ishtiaq heroine Faraa just hasn’t tried made any effort their either.
Again, loved the Wali manaoing Mamma scene, who could stay mad at Wali for long? The sweetest thing is even if it’s to his detriment; Wali won’t expose Faraa to any more of his Mother’s displeasure. So what are all the gruff, “main teek hoon “and passive aggressive “Mera Haq tho Nahi Banta,” but if you want to tell me anything, go ahead. And it is at this point I remember that despite all his good manners and Stanford etc etc he is after all a Pakistani Husband. Osman Khalid Butt and Hareem Farooq looked perfect together, achi maa ka acha beta. OKB has all the subtleties of Wali’s manipulations worked out with skilled precision: be nice to everyone, even your God awful mother in law but play it cool and distant with the one person you really want to understand you ,Faraa.
OKB is the best thing about this serial and when he and Maya Ali get together it is onscreen magic. So why, haven’t the makers utilized them as they should have? This huge back story and the annoying Tajamuls have put the actual Hero and Heroine on the back burner for far too many times. This is not the first time HUM TV has done this , I remember pulling my hair out in frustration during ZGH. Where we were treated to episode after episode of Kashaf’s father and his second wife while Zaroon and Kashaf were put on the back burner , because who knows if they actually gave the audience what they tuned into see then hamara dimagh kharab ho jaey ga or something ?Who knows what logic motivates them , because even on a purely commercial level this is is what is giving the story its TRPs. There are any number of Facebook pages carrying pictures of DeD ‘s high spot in the ratings each week which strangely enough were no where to be seen during the first twelve or so episodes. Farhat Ishtiaq has simply some of the best stories, but no matter how good a story if we stretch it so long it is going to meander. This is something I had hoped Haseeb Hassan would take care of since his Nanhi was such a huge tapestry of lives too.Still ,despite all my complaints , for me Dayar e Dil is the best thing on at the moment . So let’s hang in there and see if we get all the scenes from the OST.
