Firstly, my apologies for the late review . Ramzan, fasting etc has made a bit slow. Dayar e Dil seems to be picking up the pace again, thank God. With the slow Roohi centric pace of the last three episodes I wasn’t expecting much this week but was pleasantly surprised. There still isn’t the laser focus on Faraa –Wali that I would like but it is much better and I am hoping it stays this way and doesn’t dip and rise like ZGH.
This week definitely had a major plot twist. I had been expecting Tajamul et al to show their true colours at some point but it still came as a bit of a shock to see the blatant manipulation they were using to extort money from Roohi. It often happens in family’s that one person is more sensitive or dependent or loving ( whatever you would like to call it) and other people like Tajamul view them as Cash cows ,milking their generosity for all it’s worth . Tajamul and Zuhra had been patiently waiting for their fruit to ripe before shaking the tree. Tajamul pretends to be in desperate need of money so Roohi takes money from her daughter Faraa’s account to ease their hardship. Some might find Roohi’s behavior strange or unnatural but it isn’t uncommon. Roohi is essentially an orphan who was dependent on her brother and Bhabi for every need; she has spent most of her life trying to please them and as a result is incredibly insecure with low self-esteem. Her interactions with Faraa are cool and demanding, simply because she has not seen this relationship in her own life. The strange way Roohi fends off Faraa’s affectionate hug on her first day of medical school and her cavalier attitude to Faraa’s feelings about using the money from the joint account all show that her role model is the cold attitude Zuhra must have shown her as a child. At this point I can see how emotionally stunted Roohi is but at some point she must realise that despite her stated goal of helping her daughter escape her zabardasti ka Nikkah to Wali Suhaib Khan , she is actually pushing her towards him .
Faraa is more like her father than Roohi and despite her fears and misgivings has always been polite to Aga Jan but now her feelings are turning to actual love and appreciation for her Grandfather. Agha Jan’s unconditional and unquestioning love provides a stark contrast to Roohi’s lack of care for her daughter’s feelings. Faraa doesn’t want to spend the money in her joint account but Roohi not only with draws the huge amount of 7 lacks for her brother Tajamul but is constantly trying to khushamat her brother and his wife’s family with dawats and gifts . Agha Jaan actually cares about his granddaughter’s safety and wellbeing buying Faraa a car to ride to college in and sending her a trusted driver.
Wali and Faraa continue to clash in the most adorable ways providing most of the energy in this serial. The scene in the car showroom was so cute! I just wish we had more interaction between them. Wali likes to tease Faraa, to get a rise out of her but he would be wiser actually talking to her and showing her he is not the image she has formed of him. Like most new husbands ;) Wali is a little concerned about his wife’s new spending habits, seeing the withdrawals from their joint account but Agha Jaan is wiser and guesses Roohi may be using the money. From next week’s promos, Wali liking for Faraa has grown to love. Like most Men he likes a challenge and Faraa is gives him one at every opportunity. She is not willing to accept and compromise on anything like the usual good girls in our dramas. That is the great thing about Farhat Ishtiaq’s heroines they always have their own opinion. Well , we are beginning to see the emergence of “angry Wali” , especially form next week’s promos , where Faraa’s relationship with Moiz is beginning to bug him more and more . This maybe another turning point in the story .
We saw a lot Of Faraa this episode and it gave Maya Ali another opportunity to shine. Sans the awful baby voice, Maya has given a fine performance this week. Ahmed Zaib, aka Moiz, aka Mr. Octopus hands was back in action and yes he was touching Faraa again. Jokes aside, he really is not getting the message that despite his declaration last week Faraa is just not that into him. Again she forgets to call him or confide in him. That quick marriage may not mean as much to Faraa as it does to Wali but it does mean something. Faraa quite rightly puts Moiz in his place saying that until she knows where she stands in relation to Wali she cannot give anyone such a special place in her heart. Message to Moiz: if she liked you she wouldn’t have cared, so go find another hobby. So far Moiz is shown to be sincere towards Faraa, while his parents are the conniving ones after a wealthy Bahu. Let’s see how long that lasts? Overall Ahmed Zaib is making the grade as far as acting and despite it all I am feeling a little sorry for his character.
Acting wise, there were as usual some excellent performances with Behroz Sabswari and Tara Mahmood leading the pack. Behroz Sabswari knows how to underplay the villainy and give it maximum effect. I remember his evil Mamu from Daam which was another similarly nuanced performance. Tara Mahmood is simply delicious as bad, bad Bhabi Zuhra the archetypal TV vamps. Osman Khalid Butt and Maya are just a pleasure to watch and Ahmed Zaib is giving Moiz some much needed depth. This serial would be nothing without Agha Jan who is played perfectly by the ever talented Abid Ali. Sanam Saeed has finally toned down Roohi and now we see her vulnerable side, but she looks ridiculously young to be Faraa’s mother
This serial really has some choppy editing at times but apart that Haseeb Hassan has managed to get some good performances from his stars. I don’t know who was the brains behind the approach to this serial but they have made this fabulous story which should have been a classic a bit a damp squib because of a lack of effective pacing. Hopefully this is just the mid serial fever many serials get because of stretching and not because the serial has lost momentum. I am hoping it keeps gaining momentum and we get the thrill and romance we have been waiting for. Maya Ali and OKB have all the chemistry and screen presence required so I hope the producers did not squander it .
