Another tragic episode of Dayar e Dil, which managed to push all our emotional buttons as Bakhtiyar Khan loses his eldest son Behroz just as sadly and suddenly as his youngest Suhaib. I understand that the loss of these important characters are essential plot points but I cannot help but think perhaps an episode or two more of Roohi and Behroz’s kashmakash over the Faraa/Wali Nikkah would have made it look less melodramatic. Behroz’s death marks the exit of Mikaal Zulfikaar who has given a stellar performance as the spoilt elder son who was the catalyst for much of the woes in this story. This has to be one of Mikaal’s best performances and his presence will be missed. Speaking of stellar performances , Abid Ali as always leaves me speechless , what an amazing actor !
On their return from the haveli Roohi takes Faraa to her brother Tajamul house in order to teach Behroz a lesson. I would like to blame Roohi again but surely after twenty years of marriage Behroz must know his wife is not a flexible person , not the kind who simply accepts any unilateral decision and especially not one as important as her only child’s marriage. Instead of trying to endear his family in some way to his small minded wife he continued to reinforce every fear and bad image she had of them so though her actions were wrong they were not a surprise . Sanam Saeed was simply fabulous as the grieving widow, suspicious, confrontational bahu. I have long given up any hope of nuance but am taking her performance at face value, a strongly negative character. As a wife and a mother, there is always a wakil in my heart that speaks for Roohi’s actions but we are all more than just our roles in life; at some point we have to become greater than our circumstances, something Roohi is incapable of. She is shockingly rude to Agha Jaan, she cannot see the contradiction in her own words and most importantly of all she is not humbled in the presence of death.
Just like last week there were a lot of good performances this week. Maya Ali managed to impress again. As a loyal daughter she sneaks home to take care of her father only to find him dead later that evening. That really was a heart wrenching scene. She still greets her grandfather and Wali with respect but from next week’s promo it’s obvious that she will eventually follow her mother’s lead and blame her father’s family. Wali is very much like Suhaib a sweet person who supports his family through thick and thin but he is not a push over either. It was quite a relief to hear Wali tell Roohi off when she talked back to his grandfather and then explain Behroz’s final request to be buried next to his Suhaib. I think I enjoyed that part the most. Osman Khalid Butt is filling out Wali’s character perfectly: a pillar of strength for his family and fiercely protective of his loved ones. Is it me or does Wali kind of …sort of… maybe has a soft spot for Faraa?
With such a lengthy serial it is easy to lose interest midway , but writer Farhat Ishtiaq has managed to keep it interesting not just with plot twists but because of the unique way the audience always connects with her characters . Director Haseeb Hassan has done an excellent job translating this to the screen, keeping the momentum up week after week. So again take a bow team Dayar e Dil, this really is one of the handful of serials worth watching at the moment
BTW DeD continues its epic journey exploring Men’s hairstyles as Wali gets what I can only describe as a modified quiff and Behroz had it all gellled back. Even Moiz was sporting a new look …..Ladies you need to catch up or you will miss the style bus .
