I am going to be honest about this week’s review. When we started this season I was not very keen on writing about Daam (now don’t start yelling at me:P) , the plan was that I would review Dastaan, while Farhat would review Daam ( Farhat if you are reading this,, tum say to tou mein baad mein nibto ga abhi review likh loon pehlay) , however Farhat vanished at the last moment so I ended up writing this week’s review and you know what, I kinda envy Farhat now :P I think Daam is a wonderful serial to review about.
When it comes to Umaira Ahmed’s writing, I have mixed opinions, I have read her couple of novels, I like one I Hate the other. However Daam is different. Daam is a very realistic and a simple story however what has bought life to this script is the fantabolus direction of Mehreen Jabbar, Daam is a very non glamorous serial, unlike her previous drama VASL. Daam talks about basic relationships and the everyday issues a common man deals with. One Area where Mehreen deserves Brownie points would be casting fresh faces and extracting brilliant performances out of them.
Daam is a very pacy serial. It has sharp turns, tight screen play and doesn’t waste time in unfolding a new layer. Each and every character of this serial is acting brilliantly, I actually ran out of words to talk about the characters. Let it be the helpless father who makes plans and tries his best to hold his dignity yet is helpless to let his daughter work because of his “Sheikh chilli” ideas or the character of the son, I was disappointed to see that his check got dishonored from the bank. Poor guy, he wanted to help his family. But I guess that page is straight out of life. Success and failure are all part of life.
It’s so amazing to watch Fresh Pakistani Talent create magic on the screen, The Guy junaid, He is good. He acts smooth, brings in confidence, however he does need to lose some weight. In my opinion, he does have the john Abraham’s look alike kind of feel J but he needs to polish his acting skills more, We so need new faces.
Amina who plays the character of maliha did an amazing job in this episode; let it be the annoying sister or the helping friend. She has aced all the roles so well, however the best moment was when she realizes that zara and junaid are interested in each other. The kind of sudden shock and emotions she portrays were amazing. Later the kind of bitterness she develops is straight out of life, she is heartbroken and doesn’t understand what to do. I saw someone raising few good questions about this episode on facebook. However I think they are all justified.
Umera Ahmed’s writing is very realistic apart from the “boti snatching” scene from the previous episode I really liked her writing in daam. I guess every writer has a strong area and Umera’a Strong area would have to be writing emotional yet true to life stories, she does exaggerate a lil bit to make it more dramatic but I guess at the end of the day it’s just a drama.
Daam isthe flavor of the season, infact sometimes I wish I had other likeminded people who would review other dramas on the site, hopefully we will get new writers soon, its so encouraging to see good quality dramas on Pakistani TV screen, I have always been emotional when it comes to our own product and I strongly believe that now we are getting back to our strength in dramas, which has to be a combination of intelligent direction and wonderful stories. Daam has both of them. Let’s see how it shapes up in later episodes.
