Daam is the story revolving around the lives of Zahra (Sanam Baloch), Maliha (Aaminah Sheikh) and their families. It is written by Umerah Ahmed and directed by Mehreen Jabbar. Therefore, when I first saw the promo I knew that it would have some amazing and great performances from the cast. And I was right, so far only three episodes have been aired and the result is brilliant!
Once again in this serial (as always in Umerah Ahmed novels’ ;) ) we can see a clear contrast between the upper and lower class. However, this time it has been fantastically showed on the mini screen by Mehreen, the pace of the drama is fabulous and the editing is just marvellous….So thumbs up for Mehreen.
This third episode was really emotional; I must admit that few tears dropped from my eyes when the two ladies came for the rishta of Zahra’s sister. It was really heart breaking when after bombarding her with so many questions they suddenly asked if in the family there were any other girls. The mother replied that she has two more girls and that her second daughter is becoming a doctor, the ladies requested if they could see her. What a CHEEK!!!! Come on people!! Please wake up! We live in the 21st century and yet the girls are still portrayed as a piece of fabric or an object displayed in a shop. As in, if we are not happy with the piece that we are looking…we can always request to see another one. How dare they????
I also found ridiculous when the mum lied when she is asked about her daughter profession and age. How can she dare to lie on such sensitive issue? Well! One should not forget that one day the in-laws will discover the truth and this would make the girl’s life difficult.
Another interesting point is the role of the father and the son of the family. They are portrayed as lazy persons but who are in a search of opportunities. They are the men of the family and are suppose to maintain and run the house. But they are always shown cursing ‘Haji Saab’ who is the brother of his wife/mother. On the other hand the character of Haji saab is shown as a fake and corrupt person who knows Islamic rules but does not follow them as he does not even help his sister in any way. Fair enough! He does not want to contribute towards his sister’s expenses…..but he should not pretend to be a good person who regularly helps the poor…….I think he needs to be reminded that ‘charity begins at home!’
Finally, I would like to finish on the note that Sanam Baloch’s acting is brilliant, fantastic face expressions and an excellent dialogue delivery! As for Daam it can be considered as an emotional saga portraying the truth of our society……Not to be missed.
