I may well be writing this review for my own amusement because apart from the odd, faithful viewer, I don’t get much feedback on it. Perhaps the target audience for such so called “Mazloom Aurat “ dramas is usually married women who may not have the time or inclination to come and comment at DramaPakistani :p. This week the story really moved forward. Noreen was stopped from eloping with Mushtaq by Umama and instead of the family feeling any gratitude or warmth it only made them dislike Umaima more. I suppose no one likes their family secrets exposed before someone they consider an outsider. I loved the way Noreen looked less guilty in the elopement scenes than poor Umama when her Mother in law comes upon them. I keep calling Mushtaq lumpish and annoying but at this point I would say, well played… So Noreen reluctantly marries a man of her family’s choice and the whole story moves forward 9 years and we see her producing a son, while Umama has more daughters and Rehana remains infertile.
Yes, I get that Umama’s mother in law is just a monster in disguise. Despite her soft voice and constant prayers, her cold indifference to Umama’s feelings and lack of gratitude to Allah are insufferable. This is where my problems start, there seems to be no connection between this woman and her granddaughters. In fact we don’t see much of a connection between Murad and his daughters either, apart from what seems to be his worries for how he will provide for them. Where did this Murad come from? Where is the man who stubbornly forced his mother to ask for Umama’s hand? It is not as if poverty has worn him down, by all the clues given in the drama their household seems to be managing well .Murad even manages to take his mother on Hajj . Yet it seems there has never been one happy moment in this family’s life since Umama’s arrival, not even the odd birthday party. Maintaining that level of misery for 9years must be a burden and everyone has aged by the end of the episode. Did I say everyone, Umama still looks young, but Mehar Bano lives her role so I am not complaining. Fahad Mustapha is such a good actor but he seems wasted in this role, perhaps they will utilize him later. He and Mehar just do not have any connection at all.
Mr. Haseeb is now a widower and despite his fond recollections of his wife I have little sympathy for him. People like this are beyond the pale, sure, go ahead, and praise her now she is dead. It does not help that he is amazingly still enforcing his boycott of Umama .There is only one thing I can say in his favour, maybe he was right about not wanting Umama to marry outside the family because she seems to be have been suffering since the first time Murad noticed her. Personally I think Murad is the source of bad luck for Umama. I have to say the actress playing Noreen was good this week, just the right amount of opportunism and foolishness, with just a hint of some sort of awareness that she is taking advantage without being Deeba like. The actors, the direction everything is fine but the story is beginning to grate…so why am I watching? I want to know what happens next to Umama.
