This is the iconic table where I sat for hours and hours, days and nights; while directing and producing the first-ever pop chart show in the history of Pakistani media: “Music Channel Charts”. It all began in a small townhouse in Clifton, Karachi, where Combine Productions was originally based. My boss and executive producer, Ghazanfer Ali, gave me full creative freedom to shape the show according to my vision.We had a small but dedicated and hardworking team: Director of Photography Rashid Mumtaz, Jagdish Nanji on sound, Nadeem Kazmi as an assistant and Sheikh Khurshed Bhai managing the production house. Together, we created something truly special.Music Channel Charts launched the careers of Najam Sheraz, Shehzad Roy, Fakhar-e-Alam, Komal Rizvi, Collage, Milestones, Fringe Benefits, Nadeem Jafri, Sequencers, Aman, Naveen Naqvi, Aamir Saleem, Jazba, and many others—artists who became overnight sensations through this platform.Despite working with a shoestring budget, the videos we produced still live on in people’s hearts. MCC was a groundbreaking success that ushered in a new era of entertainment and music videos in Pakistan. I directed over 50 episodes and more than 80 music videos for various artists. Hours and hours were spent at this very table; crafting concepts that were raw, real, and unforgettable.Music Channel Charts first aired on NTM in Pakistan and was later broadcast on TV Asia in the UK from 1994 to 1996.
