Sorry my review is late but without further ado, let’s dissect episode 3 of Bheegi Palkein.
I was so much happier with this episode. Why you ask? Well was this episode not a great improvement over the last two?
Yes, no sign of Faysal Qureshi (once again!) but while he makes us play the waiting game let’s discuss the good (and the bad).
In this episode, Umer and Mehrbano start their married life together under the watchful eye of Fariha who does not leave a single opportunity to cause trouble in their otherwise blissful life together. From the demands at thenashtay ki table to the ‘mon dekhai ki angoothi’ going missing, life is certainly not going to be smooth sailing for the naye naveli dulhan.
To top it all, Mehr Bano suffers the greatest loss of all- the loss of her mother . Her regrets are multiple and all understandable. She was unable to visit her mother despite the fact that she had phoned to talk to her daughter . Mehr Bano was busy worrying and searching for what later appeared so insignificant in her eyes-‘ her ring’.What is a ring compared to the loss of a mother? How will she sit in a car without remembering that her mother had died in a rickshaw? These are the questions that haunt Mehrbano as she sheds tears at her loss. The realisation that she is all alone is acute.
Her husband Umer realises her pain and with his love and care tries to support his wife through her grief.
Ushna Shah’s performance seems to be improving with every passing episode. May this trend continue. I thought the scenes between her and Affan Waheed were very convincing. I would particularly applaud Affan Waheed in two scenes – the first one being the scene after Mehr Bano lost the ring and the second one when he brought Mehr Bano food in the bedroom. The latter was a beautiful scene overall. Ushna Shah conveyed her pain and Affan Waheed conveyed that he understood, in a beautiful exchange of words and varying emotions. When Umer says, ‘ Tum Akeli Nahin ho‘ or ‘mujhe bhi tumhare baghair bhook nahin lagti’ , you have to believe him. Without a doubt , the best scene in the drama so far .
Why is the mother-in-law turning into such a tyrant overnight ? Especially when her son, the shohar isn’t saying anything about the ring to his wife? And instead of giving tannas to her son and daughter in law, why not give a much needed lecture along with a thapar to someone who is constantly spitting venom?
In keeping with his character, Umer is unable to say much in Mehr Bano’s defence even when his mother’s tone and words are harsh. It is wrong that a simple shopping trip with his wife involves a balancing exercise for his mother and sister. Clearly he is a nice man albeit a weak one. He loves his wife and yet he cannot protect her from his loved ones. So at least I will ask the questions here, for my own satisfaction. Why is the ‘ahsaas-i- zimadari’ lecture being given to Mehr Bano and not Umer? If he is old enough to get married, he is old enough to look after his own watch! There… I feel much better:-)
Episode 3 was a definite improvement over the last two. If the promo for episode 4 is anything to go by, the waiting game for Hasan is over but sadly the torture for Mehr Bano will continue ! We have a ‘ Cinderella’ in the making but who is going to play the role of Prince Charming in her life especially when Cinderella is married? Hmmm… I will leave you with that thought.
In the meantime do share your views on this episode. Catch you next week!
