Maybe Diyaredil has raised the bar for us all, but the opening sequence of this drama felt a bit ‘ unnecessarily filmi’. A mad shower of rain and some mindless conversation later, the two leads appear looking not drenched at all, inside the medical store. Please notice that Umer’s shirt was completely dry! Why Mehrbano had decided not to take an umbrella is beyond me. Or why this drama could not have started with the medical store scene for that matter. Look I am all for romantic meetings but they should be somewhat believable!
Khair moving on, the matchmaking mom and sister have big plans for Umer. Though why Fareeha would want her only brother to marry that obnoxious girl Aisha is my next question. Fareeha appears to have something up her sleeve, probably some selfish aim of her own. With a sister like that, who needs enemies?
Some more chance meetings between Umer and Mehrbano and a hurried marriage proposal later, the tyrant sister throws a massive tantrum that actually required a ‘ zoor ka thapar’. She will prove to be the samaj ki diwar in the path of this love story.
The criticisms- too much makeup on Faryal Mehmood in every scene. I mean come on! You should look bedridden when you wake up, not with perfect makeup and hair! Then the obnoxious Aisha (after claiming that she wants her man to be the one chasing her so that he does her ‘ kadar’ ) spends a whole morning cooking lunch for Umer?! Does that sound strange to you?
The acting of Ushna Shah appears somewhat wooden and the dialogue delivery is a bit expressionless and robotic throughout (in particular, in the scene with her friend by the bus stop). When Ushna Shah talks, you feel that she is acting or there is a lack of ‘natural acting’ for that matter.
Mehrbano’s mother is sick one minute and talking about her rishta the next. The rishta that appears most appropriate is with a man who expects a house? If they can’t pay Rs 100 towards a medicine, how will they possibly afford that? Umeed pay duniya qayam hay, I suppose.
Coming to the good, I liked the acting of Affan Waheed as Umer. In the scene with the proposal, he was the only redeeming factor. He carried the scene singlehandedly- I certainly believed that he was sincere and as a result, I liked that scene. A strong start too by Ismat Zaidi, as Umer’s mother. A convincing and likeable performance by her in every scene.
While it is too early to pass a judgment on this drama, the start has been a bit filmi in many respects. However I would not write it off just yet. So do give it a watch and see what you think.
The actors can only do so much with their performance. Ultimately it all boils down to the direction and the story. We need to see where the writers are taking us with this drama. Let’s see what next week brings!
