The story is moving at a good pace, in just three episodes a lot has happened. Both the writer and director have got a good grip on the story and by the look of things, this drama is only gonna get better with time.
The story of ” Bhai ” is set in a man’s world, where the women’s destinies are decided by the men. Their only option is to accept it, either willingly or after shedding tears. Their protests fall on deaf ears and this is what happened to Khadijah. She was married to her phoppos’ son Sufiyaan and this match was arranged by their families. She gladly accepted it but just as the date of her Rukhsatti was being set, Sufiyaan and Ashraf’s egos clashed and the price was paid by Khadijah. Ashraf forced Sufiyaan into divorcing his ( Ashraf’s ) sister and just to get back at Ashraf, Sufiyaan did it. No one asked Khadijah what she wanted, once again her fate was decided and she was left their to accept it, this time after shedding tears. Her helplessness was heartbreaking.
In episode 2 the fight between Sufiyaan and Ashraf had set things in motion, the momentum was gradually building and it was only a matter of time before something terrible took place. Khadija could sense it, that was the reason why Saira called Sufiyaan to apologize for Ashraf’s behavior. It was ironic, it should have been one of her parents calling and making amends for their son’s attitude not the youngest person in the house. Even that sensible act got her in trouble with Ashraf. It seems he is just looking for an excuse to beat people up, even his own sisters. At times like these he can no longer hide behind terms like ” ghairat, izzat, mardaangi “, he is a bully who likes and enjoys hurting those who are weaker than him.
After Khadija and Sufiyaan’s divorce, the contrast between Sufiyaan and Ashraf was magnified, while Sufiyaan realized what he had done and he felt guilty, took the responsibility for his action and called Khadija to apologize. I am not saying that his apology makes everything alright again but atleast he showed some remorse, on the contrary Ashraf was putting the blame left, right and centre but wasn’t willing to take responsibility for what he had done. In his mind, Sufiyaan should have apologized to him and he would have forgiven him. It was Sufiyaan who was to blame. He was either in denial or he is a completely heartless person. His sister’s misery and heartbreak did not concern him at all. It is due to his father’s encouragement he has become a ” Bhai ” but now, even his father is realizing he has unleashed a monster.
Once again in this hard time, the women in the household turned to Hammad for support. He is the voice of reason in a house full of egocentric men, he wants to take his sister’s and move out of their family house but unfortunately he dosen’t have the means to do that. So, for the time being he is doing what he can to console and support them while living under these harsh conditions.
Irfa’s parents are looking for a suitable match for their daughter. The conversation on this point started like the usual/traditional teasing between Irfa and her mother. I wish our drama makers would just drop this tradition of parents’ particularly mothers teasing their Jawan daughters on the topic of marriage and instead having a heart to heart discussion with them. Enough with the ” Mughay abhi shadi Nahi kerni, Kya main aap pay boogh bun gaie hoon, main kabhi aap ko chor k Nahi Joawn ge etc “. I am glad the discussion did not drift on these lines and Irfa plainly told her parents what kind of a life partner she would prefer and I am glad all those characteristics were very sensible. The guy who matches the standards set by Ifra is none other than Hammad. He has no idea, Irfa has started taking an interest in him and he is also unaware of the fact that his brother has convinced himself of being in love with the same girl.
Ashraf is a typical jahil ghoonda. This aspect dominates his personality and is specially visible the way he is handling his love life. He fancies Irfa and instead of sending his parents to her house, for now he is doing all those things which he thinks would help him win her heart but in reality they are completely inappropriate and are making Irfa furious. When he mustered up the courage to talk to her and she gave him a shut up call, I was so afraid this girl would go home and stay quiet about this incident, in keeping with the ” Chup Raho ” attitude that is so popular among our writers but again I was pleasantly surprised, she didn’t. She went home and told her mother everything. This aspect of the story, I am absolutely loving. Irfa’s parents have a relationship with their daughter which all parents should have with their daughters. They love her, respect her choices and most importantly they have given her the confidence that no matter what happens they will always trust her.
By the promos, Ashraf is convincing his parents to go to Irfa’s house and on the other hand Irfa’s parents are trying to come up with ideas to protect their daughter from this gundaa’s attention and intentions.
As far as the script, direction and acting is concerned these two episodes were spot on, I am hoping they will maintain these standards in the coming episodes too.
