Aunn manages to get the job but not the one his father in law, Jamshed had planned for him.By some happy accident he goes to the wrong room and miraculously winds up with his own career in the glamorous world that is data entry. Finally Zara feels she can reward him with a Lunch DATE .This is of course a “DATE “in the Pakistani sense of the word: as in both protagonists are legally married but still too embarrassed to look at each other directly in the eye. The highlight had to be Zara threatening an overexcited Aunn with a fork. The romance didn’t end there either as a nervous Aunn squeezed Zara’s hands into a painful sandwich. To add to the confusion both decide to keep their meeting as clandestine as possible in the vain hope they might avoid offending Aunn’s interfering family. Of course they are immediately caught out by Phupo Nighat, who sees Aunn walking out of the restaurant and comes to the muddled conclusion that Aun is having an affair.
As an episode this was better than last week, laugh out loud funnier and with the two Aunn/Zara and Phupo Nighat/Jamshed tracks seamlessly blended together. However the story seems to be completing a circle rather than moving forward. Aunn dreams of getting to know his wife better seem doomed to by now familiar failure. Even getting rid of the Sofa in their bedroom didn’t work for him. I realise that apart from artistic considerations a drama has to be commercially viable but please don’t ruin this wonderful kichri by spreading it too thin. Would it really be criminal to keep dramas shorter and better? I would love to have learned more about poor Husna’s relationship with her husband and how things got to such a wretched point. That would have made the whole stretch a little more interesting.
Meanwhile the Jamshed /Phupo Nighat track is moving along to something more serious. I was falling out of my chair over the “itney sarey buddho mein kaisey pehchanoo gi?” line which was delivered completely self-absorbed, deadpan delivery that Sabreen Hasbani has given Phupo Nighat. It is strange how these two keep meeting and how the otherwise very much in charge fauji is ‘forced’ into giving the “khatoon’ so many reluctant rides here and there. Their conversations are always contentious but for some reason they never look at each other…Slaps forehead……, of course: Pakistani’Dating ritual’ !In today’s episode both parties seem to subtly acknowledge an actual interest in each other : Phupo is worried how upset Zara’s father will be if Aunn has an affair and Jamshed sends a long text asking about Nighat’s not so well daughter. Meanwhile Zara has noticed her father giving Nighat a lift in his car and can make no sense of the lies both are telling to cover their trip up.
I have to say Maya Ali was so much better in this episode, this week she matched Osman, keeping up her end of the equation really well. Osman is fabulous; he just is Aunn…period. If Osman did not play this character with so much charm and innocence this whole serial would just not work but I do have just one complaint, a little less face pulling would work just as well…..please . By the way the suite looked fabulous but a bit much for the entry level job I am assuming Aunn got…Sabreen Hasbani and Adnan Jaffer (I think is the actor’s name? someone correct me if I am wrong) may just well steal the show. I just love them, they have great chemistry. I sometimes feel for Jamshed who is going to have his orderly life turned inside out if Nighat actually enters it. I really loved this episode, beautifully directed by Haissem Hussain and wonderfully written by Faiza Iftikhar.
