Aks, has been part of many controversies ever since its promos were launched a month ago. There has been quite alot of mud-slinging between the production house and the writer’s team of a on-going novel going by the same name.
Then, it was expected to take the place of ”Meri Laadli”, the recently concluded highest TRP grosser (10.1) on Saturdays, but was instead agreed upon to replace ”Mera Yakeen” which was now moved, to the coveted weekend timeslot with much better prospects.
Anyways, so its best to watch the first episode of a show without any pre-conceived notions. You never really know, what might end up surprising you and catching you, off-guard.
Aks is the story of Zakiya and her husband Ismail and their three daughters, Zohra, Zooni and Sadia. You might want to ask then, what’s new in this? Well, , Ismail is Zakiya’s second husband and the stepfather to Zohra & Zooni. Sadia is the step-sister of the two elder siblings.
This family setup although forms the basic foundation to the storyline. But there’s a bigger twist in the tale.
Zohra is the miss goody goody two shoes that we are so familiar with in dramas and then there’s Zooni, the selfish and money worshipping individual that has greed written all over her. She only accepts Zohra and Zakiya as part of her family and hates Sadia and Ismail,from the core of her heart.
Ismail wants Zohra and Zooni to get married in his part of the family and Zakiya decides to leave everything to him. Zohra has no issues but Zooni doesn’t make an effort to hide her displeasure about the whole arrangement.
To add more fuel to the fire, enters Shah Bano. Who’s she now?
Shah Bano’s none other than our very own Zakiya’s estranged elder sister, who’s also the cause of all her misery over the years. Zakiya not only has severed all ties with her but also doesn’t care about her existence.
Shah Bano decides to flaunt her wealth in front of Zooni and also increases her already existing cravings for a highly luxurious life and wealthty atmosphere. This leads to the confrontation of Zakiya and Zooni. Zooni, sees no wrong in getting closer to her long-lost aunt but Zohra is caught unaware by the whole scenario. Who should she support? Her future or her present?
Aks, written by Sarwat Nazir has shades of Umera Ahmed’s recently concluded, ‘Maat’. There is uncanny resemblance between the characters of Zooni and Saman here as well. The star cast is repeated once again, as with any other A&B Production but atleast the choice of actors here, is satisfactory.
Overall, the actors are good but its something we’ve seen them all do before. Aiza Khan as Zooni, seems to be yet another reflection of her Aimen from ‘Zard Mausam’. Zhalay Sarhadi is yet again doing another act of her elder sister role as Madiha from ‘Madiha Maliha’. Saba Hameed leaves quite an impact as Shah Bano, but there’s nothing new about her performance. Mohib Mirza too, is doing another version of his other characters.
The only thing that’s praiseworthy for Aks is the smooth direction from Nadeem Siddique and the OST in the vocals of Sohail Haider and hopefully there’s more to expect from the writing of Sarwat Nazir this time.
New faces and new talent would have given this show a different perspective and a facelift.
Watch it, if you’re still not tired of watching the same actors doing the same things over and over.
