INTRODUCTION :
This has to be one of my favourite serials. This had the amazing star cast of Fawad Khan , Sanam Baloch ,Imran Abbas and Humaima Malik which would now be very difficult to bring together (though not impossible) . I would call these actors amongst the crème de la crème of Pakistani showbiz; not only are they ridiculously good looking but they have the acting talent to back it up. This was Director Haissem Hussain’s next venture after the huge success of Dastan and was written by Faiza Iftikhar. I cannot say it was perfect , people complained there was too much Punjabi so they couldn’t understand all of it , a dire need for some major editing and the first 5 or 6 episodes which focused on the girl’s parents were a bit of a drag .Apart from that those flaws , it was thoroughly entertaining , rip roaringly hilarious and unforgettable. Seeing Sanam Baloch (Pakistan’s sweetheart) and Fawad Khan (now superstar) as villainous, conniving cheaters was simply fabulous. These two really proved their versatility here and even gave us a glimpse into the future with a typical Yash Raj movie song in their dreams. Imran Abbas has never looked so dorkily innocent and hence so accessible and Humaima was …well Humaima –just drop dead gorgeous. Even Syed Yorgic looked so good I almost wanted Humaima to choose him.
I have to thank Faiza Iftikhar for presenting a well-rounded image of us ABCDs or born in the West desis. Yes some of us are naughty like Sanam’s character but most of us are like Humaima’s character. Faiza wrote another fun Jori between Asma Abbasi’s character and the royal Sush (Anita Camphor), playing up the India/Pakistan frenemy relationship for hilarious results . As usual Nasreen Qureshi stole the show as Beyji and it was a pleasant surprise to see an old favourite Ali Ejaz play the Dada . Haissem Hussain knows how to bring out the best from his actors and This wonderful serial had his expertise and unique artistic vision stamped all over it . Deepika will be reviewing it every 4 or 5 episodes .

Akbari Asghari is based on the story of Mirat-ul-Uroos written by Nazir Ahmed Dehlvi. The story revolves around two sisters Akbari/Becky played by Sanam Baloch and Asghari/Sara played by Humaima Malik, both of them having diverse personalities. Akbari is on one hand is a two faced person who acts all innocent in front of her parents whereas behind their back she is dating a white boy, smokes and gets wasted. On the other hand, Asghari is a spoiled brat but she is not a hypocrite. Akbari and Asghari’s parents Hatim and Kulsoom who prefers to be called by her nickname Kim. Hatim and Kulsoom had a love marriage 25 years ago but the couple is always at loggerheads mainly because of their financial situation (Hatim works a cab driver and Kulsoom works at a chaat stall owned by an Indian Gujarati businessman) and not able to assert control over their two daughters.
Back home, Hatim has a family which consists of his elder brother Luqman, his wife Shaheen, their two sons Akbar and Asghar, his aunt aunt Biji and last but not the least his father Karim Fazal Chaudhary aka KFC. When all four were very young their rishta were fixed with each other. Akbari’s rishta with Asghar and Asghari’s rishta with Akbar. However as these cousins have grown up, they are least interested in marrying one another because of having grown up in a completely different environment. The sister duo Akbari and Asghari were raised abroad whereas the brother duo Akbar and Asghar were raised in their village in Punjab, Pakistan.
So far, we have seen as father of two young daughters of marriageable age Hatim wants to go to Pakistan and get his daughters married to his nephews asap. And his aunt and father are pressurizing him as well to come to Pakistan and do the needful. It will be interesting to see how things transpire from here as Shaheen, Akbar and Asghar’s mother is dead against marrying her sons to their cousins because she is convinced that since the girls were raised abroad they have forgotten their Pakistani values and are spoiled brats. Little does she know what one of her son Asghar played by the heartthrob Fawad Khan is up to.
I am particularly excited about Hatim’s family arriving in Pakistan as the show’s only get interesting from there.
