Of course we cannot hope to compete with Drama Buff’s excellent original review of this serial and if anyone wants to they can find those reviews under our HUM Tv menu labelled Akbari Asghari
All hell broke loose ever since KFC and Beji ask Hatim to return to Pakistan and get his daughters married off to their cousins as their rishte were fixed when they were children. Honestly, I really enjoyed last three episodes! It was not surprising to see Akbari, Asghari, Akbar and Asghar expressing their disinterest in marrying one another respectively. Having grown up in a completely different environment Akbari and Asghari are opposed to the idea of marrying their cousins. They have doubts and reservations about Akbar and Asghar and Akbari, however does not express her disinterest clearly until and unless she elopes from the house leaving a letter behind only to be found by her mother later. Asghari, on the other hand has been very vocal about her reservations in marrying her cousin and this is what I loved about her! I think Humaima Malick is doing great justice to her character and she is looking so pretty in the show. However I find Sanam Baloch lagging behind a bit in the acting department in this one, although I find her a very talented and seasoned actor but since I have already seen this show once before I know she improves by leaps and bounds in the coming episodes.
In Pakistan, the mood is the same. Akbar and Asghar are not interested in marrying their cousins and are trying every trick in the book to save themselves from it. Akbar miyaan is apple of his mother’s eyes, a religious fellow, paanch waqt ka namazi, and it’s totally against his principles to marry a girl who was raised abroad in a non-Islamic environment. He wants to marry a girl who is religious and is of a great character and whoa, he has even found a match for himself in his Peer-o-Murshad’s daughter. Truth be told I have never been a fan of Imran Abbas Naqvi but he has been impressive as Akbar so far. Our heartthrob Fawad Khan who’s playing Asghar has also been very impressive so far. He is secretly dating his phuphoo’s daughter Shabbo and doesn’t want to marry either of Hatim’s daughter like his elder brother. I find the brother duo’s personality very interesting, we have Akbar who’s religious and very disciplined whereas on the other hand his brother Asghar is completely opposite of him, he is silly as well as very shrewd and that shrewdness suits him well. Fawad has played the character of Asghar effortlessly.
Akbari Asghari has exposed the double standards and stereotypical nature of our desi folks. It does not surprise me at all when I see two set of cousins who without having met one another in a long time are judging each other to no end. Let alone the cousins, the elders are no less either, especially the mothers Kulsum and Shaheen. Shaheen thinks the girls must be wearing inappropriate outfits, loitering around with white boys and doing all wrong stuff. On the other hand the girls think boys are pendoo and not educated as they have been raised in their pind in Pakistan.
Kudos to Zee Zindagi for editing the show very well. If I had to choose one scene that I truly enjoyed and could re-watch without getting bored is the one where Akbar goes to Dada ji to request him to not have him marry to Hatim’s daughter and poor fellow is not given an opportunity to put his views forward as Dada ji keeps talking and talking. My most favourite characters so far are Dada ji, Beji, Akbari and Shaheen or should I call her Sheen?! The Punjabi in me loves the way Beji pronounces her name. Lastly, I am quite impressed by Haissam Hussain’s direction, he definitely knows how to get the best out of his actors/characters.
