Aik Nayee Cinderella – Episode 18

It is definitely an interesting situation when you watch the second last episode of a drama serial which you have enjoyed for the past 18 weeks and your mind draws a total blank when you sit down to write the review. Methinks the issue might be that this particular episode seemed to be an extension of the previous one. With some tight editing, both the previous and this episode could have been combined. But then, my sense of justice argues, how else to convey the ever-stark contrast between the two male leads – the street-smart Rooman and the brain-freezes-in-the-face-of-adversity Mayer? To be honest, I know I could have felt more for Shah Baba terrorizing Mayer but the impact was largely lost because it was stretched out so much. In a second last episode, I expect more revelations, more twists and less reflection. Unfortunately, from the past five to six episodes, we ready knew everything there was to know about Meesha’s past, so nothing today came as a surprise. The discovery of Aayah jee didn’t offer anything new either. I kept waiting for her to say something to Meesha – something new. But that was not to be.

Overall, I found myself questioning a lot in this installment: How was Meesha able to move in and out of the place where Aayah Jee was imprisoned? In fact, Meesha seems to have the run of the place, which seems rather strange. Didn’t Shah Baba realize that Meesha might be able to gain access to the prison? It is also rather eyebrow-raising that Mayer is scared stiff of being seen talking to Meesha while Rooman who wants to give off the impression that he does not know Meesha, has no qualms meeting her at night and chatting away, even accompanying her to the prison. Overall, Shah Baba’s security seems pretty lax to me. I wonder why Mayer felt so helpless.

Speaking of Mayer, you had to clench your fists. I mean really, could he get more self-centered? He was so frightened by Shah Baba and yet, he was willing to leave Meesha there and save his own skin. In stark contrast, Rooman took a great risk by concocting a false story and feeding it to Shah Baba. While one wants to run away, the other is braving it out.

The best part of this entire episode has to be the part where Rooman enters Shahbad and sees Meesha is crying. Finally, finally, a sweet scene after so long! The next episode is the last, and I am definitely hoping for something that will totally blow me over in a finale that ensures I will remember this serial as well as I remember Haissam Hussain directions Dastaan and KPKP, and Faiza Iftikhar’s ending to Muhabbat Rooth Jaye Tou!
