Okay, so after a two-week break, I am writing this review – and oh man, I am SO smitten by this episode. Last week, I had drawn a total blank after watching the 7th episode – something that rarely happens but does, even with some of my favourite drama serials. Now don’t get me wrong – the episode was great. BUT it really was not a review-worthy episode for me because it was one of those times when you open a compose window and all that comes into your mind is: “Errr, it was good. What else?” Plus, there was so much emphasis on the party that really was not going to happen that I was seriously waiting for the story to move forward. AND, the whole Surraya aunty episode left a sour taste in my mouth.
All peeves and personal whims aside, this week’s episode was FABULOUS! Yes, there literally is NO other word for it. An episode that has an overall less of Zainee and Meher, and more of Meesha, Mayer and Rooman has to score brownie points, and this one surely did. It was a wonderful blend of romance, friendship, personal reflection, and mystery. Oh yes, mystery! I love the way Faiza Iftikhar has introduced all extra tracks to ensure suspense for that all those who have read the novel and know, literally, where the story is headed. The introduction of Shah Baba was quite unexpected – who is he? Who is he and his son looking for? Something tells me this is connected with Meesha’s past somehow – or maybe not. We will find out in the upcoming episodes…
In terms of romance, well, all OKB fans can bash me on the head for this, but until this particular episode, I had not really felt any chemistry between Meesha and Mayer (apart from the boat scene). Nor had I been particularly bowled over by OKB’s acting. This particular episode, from the start to the end, belonged to Osman Khalid Butt aka Mayer. His scenes with Meesha and the way he first makes up with and then gets into another fight with Zainee were a treat to watch. We have cribbed to no end about his over-makeup but the fact is, I have not really felt any wow-factor about his acting either. In all his scenes, Maya Ali, Esheeta and Hina Bayat do so well that my attention remains riveted on them, with Osman Khalid Butt remaining in the background. Not in this episode, though! Today, I found myself saying: YES, this is the wow factor. This is the point where the person becomes the character, where they emote so well that everything and everyone else goes in the background.
And FINALLY, you could sense chemistry between Meesha and Mayer, feeling that yes you really do want them to be together, barring all rhyme and reason. Meesha’s inner turmoil as she struggled to shrug off Mayer and at the same time, capture his attention were extremely endearing. I just loved the way it was conveyed subtly how frank she is with Rooman and how reserved with Mayer.
Faizan Khawaja again rocked as the voice-of-reason Rooman, who counsels both Meesha AND Aimee. It is actually interesting to note that this drama serial’s dialogues run totally contrary to what is being portrayed in other Mazloom Aurat sagas, where we are made to think anything and everything is fair in love and war for the main protagonist. Hats off to Faiza Iftikhar for getting the message across that no, there are limits that should not be crossed, even by a supposedly Mazloom Aurat, even if she is being wronged to the nth degree!
The cinematography in this drama serial has rocked, and in this particular episode, I think it crossed its own extremely high standard. The scene where Meesha is throwing pebbles in the lake, and the scene where you see Meesha and Mayer’s silhouette over the scenic valley were classic! Loved every bit of it. Haissam Hussain’s signature style was stamped all over most of the scenes, which left the viewer like me in a lurch – who do I really want Meesha to be with? My fairy tale voice says Mayer and my voice of reason says Rooman!
Mayer has now embarked upon the journey to use Meesha to make Zainee jealous, much to the surprise of both the unsuspecting ladies – where will his latest move end up? I am totally looking forward to next week now! Well done, Haissam Hussain, Faiza Iftikhar, A & B productions, and the entire team plus cast for a stellar job! You guys deserve a standing ovation already
