Best Serial
(Polls) Bashar Momin. (Geo TV)
Surprise ! For those of us expecting Pyarey Afzal to win this category, this may have been a disappointment but not for the diehard Faysal Qureshi and Bashar Momin fans who were busy clicking away to make sure their favourite serial won. This serial was sometimes as exasperating as it was fascinating. It gave us some memorable performances and a not so typical story of redemption and transformation a la Beauty and the beast. Pyarey Afzal and Shukk tied for a strong second place , showing how tough the competition was for this most coveted category
(Critic’s ): Marasim (A-plus TV)
Marasim Stood head and shoulders above the rest. The story was not new but the script and the execution made it a perfect example of what great team work can do. Full credit to writer Zanjabeel Shah and the talented Director Owais Khan and the entire Marasim Cast for making this a picture perfect treat for drama fans. Similarly Pehchan was an old fashioned story of an old fashioned girl married to the wrong man but the exemplary execution by director Khalid Ahmad and subtle, understated performances made it one of the better serials this year. Pyaray Afzal was a wonderful concept, a beautiful blend of the old and the new which ignited the imagination of the masses.Beautifully written by Khalil Ur Rahman Qammar, this rare male oriented drama was a great showcase for the star that is Hamza Ali Abbasi. Director Nadeem Baig succeeded in managing a long story and a cast full of talented actors without losing the public’s interest.
Best Writer :
(Polls) Bee Gul
I guess the secret is out now! Drama Pakistani does have the most thoughtful and informed audience and here is the proof; choosing one of the most subtle and contemplative writers, Bee Gul, for their favourite. Her sometimes bleak, almost painfully raw perspective has its roots in the very best traditions of Urdu and indeed world literature.
(Critics):Kahlil ur Rahman Qammar
Khalil Ur Rahman Qammar has always been popular and this year he caught the spirit of the nation with Pyarey Afzal. His dialogues and characterizations tapped into the deepest veins of our collective psyche like no one else. Zanjabeel Asim Shah is a writer of imagination and compassion whose stories and characterisations not only make us think but inspire us to something better. Bee Gul for the reasons above.
Best Director
(Polls):Yasir Nawaz
Yasir Nawaz is a talented director, each episode of his serials is technically flawless, with seamless editing and that oft times elusive ability to connect and hook an audience. His serials are always a thrill ride and he is a master of building suspense. We are waiting for him to realize the full potential of his formidable abilities, by visualizing a serial as a complete package from start to finish without losing the intensity somewhere in the middle. Nadeem Baig was a close runner up for this category . The audience loves him for his more laid back style, concentration on characterization and ability to extract good performances. Here is a man who can build that special chemistry between performers literally out of thin air , who can make the sometimes long monologues and slightly filmy dialogues of Pyarey Afzal more watchable.
(Critics):Owais Khan for Marasim
Owais Khan is our choice for his imaginative yet thoughtful presentation of this no doubt powerful script. His grip on the story never faltered from start to finish, giving us a highly polished product that achieves the highest standards.Khalid Ahmed for capturing the subtle intricacy of Pehchan and making even melancholy look beautiful. Yasir Nawaz for reasons mentioned above.
Best Actress
(Polls ) Sanam Saeed for her popular performance in Shukk
Sanam Saeed is a talented actress who has won many hearts for Zindagi Gulzar hai and in Shukk she again proved her ability by skillfully playing a difficult character which resonated strongly with the audience and her faithful fan base. Following closely behind with a popular second place Aiza Khan who gave an unsentimental and surprisingly strong performance as Farah Ibrahim in Pyarey Afzal.
(Critics) : Aisha Khan
Aisha Khan for her simply fabulous portrayal of a woman whose life is suddenly turned upside down. This is just one of a string of great performances from this gifted and powerful actress. Sonya Husain for her simply heartfelt performance in Shikwa. Iffat Omer for her standout performance in Pehchan , what can we say for this tour de force except ..Standing ovation !
Best Actor
Faysal Qureshi proves that Bashar ka Khuaff has reached the readers of Drama Pakistani! Despite a few missteps, his performance made Bashar Momin unforgettable and most of this serial rested on the force of his mighty acting skills. Faysal is a natural actor who lights up any role or story he appears in but as with most diamonds he needs the polish of an equally strong director to realise even more of his vast potential. We are desperately waiting for the Bashar Momin Movie that should have been. Following closely behind and tying for second place Hamza Ali Abbasi and Adeel Husain round out this category .
(Critic):Ahsan Khan for his knock out performance in Marasim
Ahsan Khan proved what a great actor he really is with this totally unsentimental portrayal of an ordinary man unable to make the right choices. This faultless performance is arguably one of the best we have seen in a long time. It will be unfair not to mention Hamza Ali Abbasi for his role as Pyare Afzal and indeed it was a tough cal. It was great to see Abassi’s magical star presence and ability to charm an entire nation with his Afzal.
Best supporting actres
(Polls) Sana Javaid for Pyarey Afzal.
Sana Javaid gave a wonderful, fun performance that had us all enthralled. Sana is a beautiful, gifted actress and a rising star we should all watch out for.Close behind was Ushna Shah for Rukhsar , her ability to stand out in any production makes her a star and it is only a matter of a little time and honing before she fulfills her promise . Tying for runner up ,Saba Hamid for Pyarey Afzal..
(Critic’s) Saba Hamid for Pyarey Afzal.
Tired as we are of seeing her as a zalim saas in serial after serial it was a breath a of fresh air to see her as a normal, loving mother in Pyarey Afzal . Needless to say she was wonderful and stole the show in more than one episode. Anita Camphor for her good work as Mrs Khan in Pehchan.
Best Supporting actor
( Polls) Azfer Rahman
Azfer Rehman for his rock and roll performance in Bunty I love you. This was a tough role as a charming manipulator but Azfer’s excellent and consistent performance managed to win the audience even if he didn’t get the girl. Sami Khan followed closely with his fabulous performance in Bashar Momin; again he didn’t get the girl but he was sometimes the only point of normalcy in a story full of over the top melodrama.
(Critic’s ) Firdause Jamal for Pyarey Afzal
No stranger to praise or excellence Firdause Jamal’s brilliant performance was mesmerizing. There were entire episodes we watched in a happy trance simply for molvi Subhanullah.
